Hooking up an External Line doubler

...the iScan line doubler? If so, how would I go about hooking it up with my HDTV and digital cable STB? I am thinking...

From the wall, run the Coax cable into the cable STB. There are only a Coax and Composite outputs on the STB, so I would run the Video Composite to the iScan then from the iScan Analog Video Output to the Analog Video Input in the TV. My TV does not have a DVI, does this matter with use of the iScan? Now I have the video composite hooked up, what about the Audio? As it is now I will have no sound, right? Would I run the Audio Composite (Red & White) directly from the STB to the TV?

Is this setup worth the cost of the iScan? I think the Pro you can get for around $700 and the Ultra for around $1100.

Analog Video Input

On my TV, I think the Analog Video Input is what is labeled VGA 640 x 480 60Hz. Is this correct? It looks like the same connection as on the back of the iScan.

Yes - component.

>>My TV does not have a DVI, does this matter with use of the iScan?

No

>>Would I run the Audio Composite (Red & White) directly from the STB to the TV?

Yes, to the same input you put the component cable on

As for the VGA input just skip it and use component.

Richard, true that the I-Scan (Pro) won't allow use of the 'stretch' (wide-zoom) mode on my TV, and all NTSC programming will show as either boxed in the center or choice of gray or black side bars?

Whatever your format options currently are for 480P will still remain. The DVDO Pro that I use has full for DVD and squeeze for 4:3 content.

Confused...

Richard I was a little confused to your response...there are NO component outputs on my digital cable STB or Super Video for that matter. Also on the iScan there are no component outputs.

So, what does this mean:

>>so I would run the Video Composite to the iScan then from the iScan Analog Video Output to the Analog Video Input in the TV.

Yes - component. ?????????????

And what does this mean:

As for the VGA input just skip it and use component.??????

You cannot connect it to these products. You are supposed to connect it to one of your 480P display inputs.

>>Also on the iScan there are no component outputs.

Yes there are. You need an RGB breakout cable and set the switch for YPrPb instead of RGB.

Ahhh...

The following is from Silicon Image Spec page (Ultra):

Video Input

Six video inputs accept standard NTSC, PAL & SECAM signals
Two composite video inputs
Two S-Video inputs
Two component video inputs
One video pass-thru input accepts HDTV and PC resolutions

Analog Video Output

15-pin VGA-type HD connector
RGB or YPbPr output colorspace
Separate H, V sync, composite sync, or sync on green (or Y)
Output:
480p progressive scan video, 31.5kHz horizontal scan rate for NTSC input sources
576p progressive scan video, 31.25kHz horizontal scan rate for PAL & SECAM input sources
RGB - 0.7 Vpp, TTL Sync
YPbPr - 0.7 Vpp, Sync on Y - 1.0 Vpp

I see now that there is RGB or YPbPr output...when you say 'RGB breakout cable' is that just a regular component cable? And the switch I assume is on the iScan itself, right?

I also see that this accepts two composite inputs - that is what I was thinking to hook into from my digital cable STB. Is this incorrect? Didn't really understand the 'You are supposed to connect it to one of your 480P display inputs.'

Breakout Cables

Richard, (or anyone who can help)

I think I answered my own question as far as the RGB Breakout cable but I found two different types. One has three component connections while another goes from the 15-pin to five component connections. Which one would I use and what is the difference?

You can use either one. The one with three can only be used for YPbPr and the one with five can be used for YPbPr or RGBHV hence the five connections. If you use the RGBHV cable then you will not be using the HV connections since you will be setting the output for YPbPr.
