I have a 43" Hitachi HDTV 16:9. And I've noticed that the edges of fine lines like someone's face or the 1080 that comes on the screen after you hit virtual HD on the remote has a small shadow or outline.
It's like a double effect. I only notice this on the left 1/3 of the screen. The Center seems to be in perfect focus.
Is this normal or do I have a problem?
Thanks!

You have seperate red, green and blue pictures. Are you describing an outline that is one of these colors? If so than try magic focus. On the new models there is also manual convergence which may work better. Refer to your owners manual for more info.
Another thing you could be describing is ringing or edge enhancement. Try turning down the sharpness control.

Thanks Richard,
I have already used the magic focus. It doesn't seem to be aspecific color, but more of (as you described it) ringing or edge enhancement.
I will try turning down the sharpness.
Thanks for the feedback.

Richard,
I've just turned down the sharpness to about 20 and then put a DVD in. When the "Warning" writing came on the screen, I could notice this ringing effect on the left side of the screen. But as the writing on the screen moved from the left to the right, it went away. The ringing appears to be only on the letters on the left and not the entire screen.
Is it normal to have a little ringin where the picture is not focused (ie. on the left or right)?
Thanks,

Do you have the Avia DVD? Do you have any of the Star Wars DVD with the THX Optimizer on it? There are number of other DVD's that have this also. There is a test pattern for sharpness and geometry. Go to that and check out the response. Typically white lines will form next to vertical edges - adjust the sharpness until they go away. Also turn of the SVM. switching to movie mode will also ball park many of these settings for you.
Last resort - call service or take the DVD to the store and check it on the floor model and see if you get the same results.

Richard,
Thanks for your advice. You helped me get on the right track resolving this issue. It turns out that the Hitachi Auto Converge feature (Magic Focus) WAS leaving a little red outside the white line on the left 1/3 of the screen. After adjusting this with the Manual Focus, the ringing was gone.
However, after turning my TV off and then back on again... ALL Colors were badly displaced. After trying this over a few times, I narrowed it down to the manual focus. Anytime I used the manual focus, turned the TV off and back on, the settings would be displaced. But when I used AutoConverge, the settings would be ok. (with the default red out of place) So, I'm having a new TV delivered from Circuit City.
Thanks for all your help.
Happy Holidays!
Louis

That is not ringing. It is called misconvergence. sharpness can add an artifact called ringing - the additional white line that should not be there. Also SVM will add a white or black line to vertical edges - an artifact - turn it off.
Sorry to hear the TV must be replaced. Hopefully better luck on TV number 2.
