Hi,
I've always had this even after my Tosh 65h80 was ISF'd and its always on the left of the white lines on the court. There is also a slight line or halo on the left of things. Most of the time its not visible but if there is a dark background such as the green court in tennis it's visible enough to be a little distracting.
Do any of you experience anything like this and have any idea what would cause it?
All my levels, Contrast/brightness are at 50% and as I said generally it's not very visible but tennis really brings it out.
My dealer said that it's not correctable on that model of TOshiba!!
Maybee Richard in his travels has seen it.

It sounds like you are describing Edge Enhancement - Yuck!
First step is to determine the source. During the calibration this should have been brought to your attention and would have been about adjusting the sharpness control. Either the sharpness is turned down to get rid of it or if it is so bad the calibrator should bring this to your attention and tell you what the best course of action is. This is an important issue because the pattern generator we bring with us does not have any edge enhancement so if there is any (there always is) it is coming from the display.
The source can also have edge enhancement in which case there is nothing you can do excpet live with it or turn down your sharpness control.
I have seen edge enhancement on various HDTV programs.

I have not kept up with this programming but in the past the NTSC cameras were chock full of edge enhancement - this may very well be the source of the artifact.

Peter,
Welcome to the world of discerning viewers!
I did take a look and indeed there is a black line next to the white lines on the court, on the left and right sides using my Panasonic 51. The right side is darker and more visible. With the Samsung 151 they are still there but softened due to the poor frequency response of this product.
This means the artifact is coming from the source, local or national, and not our equipment.

Hi Richard,
This phenom on my set is not new, it's just prominent in tennis with those straight white lines. Mine is only on the left side and its a light grey shadow.
Watching "Monday Nite Football" I'm sure it's still there but there's so much color I don't see it.
Anyway Michael Chen my ISF'r is coming in from Calgary to Toronto from the 13th to the 30th and will be headquartering at my place. Although everything aside from that line (which he said was a problem with that Tosh model) is fine, he said he was going to give it a tuneup.
It was originally done Feb 2001. We'll look at it again re that shadow and I'll let you know if he was able to get rid of it and if so how. He has some new equipment which he mentioned in his last e-mail but I didn't recognize it so I guess it's some kind of calibration tool.
Thanks for your input,
Peter m.

I saw none of the things which you mentioned on my set and this was not 4.3 stretched except for the non-HD cameras. As a tennis player and fan I saw a lot of the coverage and thought CBS/USA did a super job. I saw so much HD that in watching football I got depressed with the SD. I did do some tweaking with my new DVE DVD and it did make a difference in the PQ.

It could have been local for Peter and I but...
From experience, most will see it and think it belongs and is a normal part of the picture. I can't tell you how many times somebody has said, "You mean that? Huh. I just thought that was how it was supposed to look."

Hi Guys,
Well I've had the set touched up complete with the removal of the screen and taking almost 3 years of dust of the guns, (I wonder how it gets in there) any way my ISF'r says it's a TOSH issue with that generation of set as is the center screen ghosting line which is only visible when the screen is totally white.
It's not a big deal and really is only prominent when you have a vertical white line like in tennis and a perfect green background (rest of the court).
I don't notice it on Mondaynite football but did see it a bit on the left side of a golfer putting on the pristine and very geen greens at Augusta National during The Masters.
