I have a Sony 34HS510 and my cable box allows me to change from 790P to 1080i. The Sony can utilize both. What is the Sony's native resolution? and What is the best way to handle channels broadcast in differant modes? Some are 790 and some are 1080.

That Sony model natively displays 1080i. It will accept a 720p signal, convert it into something the TV can display (1080i? 540p? other?) and display it, but it will not display a 720p signal natively. Most HDTV's do the same thing, as 1080i is the more popular standard for hardware even though 1080i and 720p are both viable broadcast standards (very few HDTV's will do BOTH 1080i and 720p natively, and those that do are not cheap).
So, when watching 1080i programming, your cable box should always be set to output 1080i. When watching 720p programming, I would just leave the cable box outputing 1080i and forget about it. The cable box will convert the 720p to 1080i, output that to your TV, and it will look good. There's a chance, however, that your TV will do a wee bit better of a job at converting the 720p signals to 1080i than the cable box. If that's the case (and you'll have to test this out yourself), then it might be worth it to you to switch the cable box to output 720p for those times you're watching 720p programming.
