What is wrong with Comcast HD?

Just had Comcast HD installed. Boy was I disappointed. The HD programs (only 5 channels)are in 480p and while they are better than the non HD programs they are NOT NEAR - as in no comparison - to the quality of the OTA channels I receive from 50 miles away. I figure they must be compressing the heck out of the signal. Is there anything we can do to get 'real' HD reception that will approach OTA.

That doesn't sound right - should be 1080I or 720P. Are you sure you have the box setup right?

When Comcast installed my Moto 5100 HD box, the guy left it at the default of 480i/p. I had to go into the setup menu and change it 720p.

I have the Motorola dct5100 from Comcast and love it. I have yet to compare OTA (I still have it hooked up)to Cable but I am satisified with the picture quality I am receiving from Comcast. Probably the biggest reason I added Comcast HD was I wanted to see if the locals on Comcast HD were plagued by the video and audio dropouts I experience with OTA. I have screwing with my antenna for almost a year now trying to eliminate the audio and video problems. Through my efforts they are much improved but still have not been eliminated. So far I have not experienced any such problems with the locals on Comcast (crossing my finger). The INHD channels were a pleasant surprise.

Something is wrong with either the box, the setup, or your TV. Comcast HD is very good and is 720P and 1080i at my home in northern Calvert County, MD.

Did the installer hook the box to your TV with component video cables and/or DVI along with audio cables?

Did an inexperienced installer just use an RF hookup or ntsc video cable or an S-video cable instead?

Sounds like you need a service call!

It is hooked up with component cables to TV and optical cable to amplifier as well as R & L stereo audio cables to TV. The component cables are connected to DVI on back of TV. Someone mentioned that the Motorola box has a menu somewhere and that the default is 480i/p. I have searched everwhere for that menu to change to 720p or 1080i but cannot find it. Can anyone help me out?

If it is a Motorola dct5100 you power down the box (make sure the TV is on and the proper input selected)and with it powered down push the menu button. The should display the setup menu, you should see choices like TV type (set for 16:9 if your tv is widescreen), and 4:3 override, etc.

I am pretty sure that box automically converts the signal anyway.
