Enterprise in HD?

As in earlier post said Enterprise was supposed to be in HD, there were posts which explained why that could not be, but yet this evening when I watched it the Zenith HDTV banner was displayed. The picture quality on UPN digital looked better than SD yet there were black bars on all sides of the show. I am assuming the top and bottom bars were due to the aspect ratio becasue on the SD station it was wide screen format. The bars on the side were because it was transmitted in 4:3 format even on the digital station. If the show is filmed in widescreen format and transmitted in HD why are they forcing the 4:3 during transmission. I tried to change the format (zoom, expand, etc.) but could not because the signal was HD (as reported by the TV). Anybody get a 16:9 HD picture?

Well, Dale didn't list Enterprise or Jake 2.0 on UPN as High Def in the daily guide, so maybe he knows something we don't? It hasn't been broadcast yet here in Los Angeles... hopefully the station out here gets it right!

And NBC apparently felt that everyone wanting to watch West Wing would rather see Law & Order SVU.

What is wrong with all these networks? They are a true bunch of screw ups, lately!

Enterprise was HD in San Francisco, and nicely done.

This is just a wild guess on my part, but I'd bet that the Bush Administration cancelled tonight's West Wing, citing national security. The promos NBC was showing made me a little nervous.

Well, since a number of people on this forum did get to see Enterprise in full 16:9 HD I have sent an email to my local UPN affiliate inquiring as to why they could not transmit the program in it's proper format. I am interested to see their response.

Well I received an answer from UPN Indy (a very timely response) and it was actually a very understandable answer. Indiana does not observe daylight savings like the rest of the country, so the programs are recorded and delayed one hour so they can maintain the prime time timeline. Our UPN station does not have the ability to record multiple programs in HD and retransmit them. They said they could do it but it would have delayed Enterprise until 10:00PM because they only have one HD recorder. Starting 10/29 when everybody goes back to Standard time we will be on the same time as the east coast (we are currently one hour behind) and they can pass the signal through in HD.

In San Francisco, Enterprise was in Dolby Digital 2.0 and sound very good in Pro-Logic II.

I live in San Mateo, south of San Francisco, and saw and heard a very nice 16x9 Enterprise last night. I think, though, that it looked more like 480p @ 16X9, that is, like a good looking DVD. From what I have read about the production of STE, isn't it more likely that this was upconverted to 1080i? Not that I'm complaining - it looked great - but it didn't have the depth and crispness I have come to associate with OTA HD.

regards, billb....

I agree Bill and like some other shows that came on line it may take a few broadcasts to get it right. ER was the same way when it first hit and then suddenly jumped up a few notches.

Wait I'm confused. Is Enterprise in HD or not?

I'm confused. I saw the earlier post that explained why Enterprise isn't in HD. Are those of you seeing it in HD really just seeing an up-converted format of Enterprise? Or was the earlier account incorrect? I mean I thought a true HD would mean that Enterprise is being recorded in HD to begin with...... is this true?

The first ever Enterprise in HD was last Wednesday. UPN announced it only a few days ahead of time. Enterprise is filmed. (The film grain is evident.) So a true HD presentation is possible. In fact, older episodes might turn up in true HD. But as Richard explained, the quality (resolution) will likely be uneven at first. And it is not likely that all the affiliates are on-board.

Hi,
Well, one of the Canadian HD stations CityTVHD seems to be picking up the UPN feed and was advertised as being in HD tonite (maybee last week also I didn't check), so I'll certainly tune in.

There was no mention regarding the audio but as long as the video is 1080i DPLII or DTS Neo 6 will do nicely for the time being.

Speaking of audio, don't you find it curious that Jag and the Guardian on CBS are not in 5.1 but NFL Football is. In a way it's neat cause the parabala is pointed right at the football during a kickoff and sometimes it sounds like a gun going off whent the ball gets the boot.
