The last few months I havbe been getting terrible breakups and glitches from channel 4, where it used to be perfect. Don't seem to be getting much help from the station. Are there others out there seeing the same problems? If so post here, let us know - also call the station 847-4410 ask for John Merrill (chief engineer) and let him know!

CBS / WIVB HD problems

Hi Dan,

Yup -- I've noticed that as well and I've written and called John Merrill [ who is quite nice but "at the mercy" of the corporate structure so it would seem. ]

The WIVB - 39.1 picture QUALITY is very good -- the best of the Buffalo HD stations at my location -- but the quality CONTROL is awful. WIVB breaks up more than any other HD station -- including WNED / PBS which is 40 miles further away.

Actually, last night -- October 23, 2003 -- was really annoying. CSI was breaking up alot and so was WITHOUT A TRACE.

I still think there's some link to the audio content -- the worst break ups seem to occur just before a loud sound with alot of bass energy.

To prove the point; on SURVIVOR -- I was just surfing not watching -- they were firing cannons and each time the picture would lock up and go black just BEFORE the shot which makes me think it's also linked to the audio content . . . . SOMEWHERE

I got an E mail from Southern Ontario and they're having the same problem and noted that others were as well.

HOWEVER, they also noted that they all have Samsung receivers,
as do I. So maybe there's an issue there as well. . . or a combination of issues.

What box do you have?

Anybody else out there with Samsung or WIVB Buffalo issues?

Best,

Greg

I do have a Samsung 150, but it has always worked great, and it does work great for the other channels. Last night (10/28) was another terrible night for channel 4.
is there any way to complain to fcc or anybody about this? it seems like the station isn't doing anything. Any ideas?

Good idea but I can't seem to find any users group. Tried calling the station a few times yesterday but the GM wouldn't talk to me. Talked to the chief engineer, he said all their programming is coming out of Indianna now, they laid off a bunch of people, and they don't really have the time to look at this stuff.

Well they solved their problem last night (Thursday) - they just didn't bother to turn on the digital signal!

Hey Dan,

I'm not sure what this means but on Thursday nite, 30 October,
I watched CSI and WITHOUT A TRACE on WIVB 39.1 and they were in full 16 x 9 High Def.

As per usual there were a series of breakups in both shows.

Maybe it's the Solar Flair.

I wasn't surprised to hear about the lay-offs there . . . it shows.

Just thought of something . . . I'm not a football fan but I've watched some of the CBS weekend football in HD and it looks quite good AND I have yet to see a breakup. Ya don't suppose they're giving more bandwidth to sports??????

Also, it seems that WKBW / ABC has been reprimanded by the FCC for dragging its digital feet. The FCC turned down their request for an esxtension . . . and I have no idea what that means
either.
