I'm seriously considering buying one, though I know it will be a dinosaur in a few years. They are down to about $600 now. HD PVRs are apparently not far off, but I've read that they may top a grand at first. I've also read that HD DVD could be 3+ years away yet.
I've seen some terrific programming on INHD that I'd like to acquire, before it's gone forever, so I may take the D-VHS plunge soon. For those of you that have, was it worth it? And did you get the DH30000 or the DH40000?
Any others with thoughts about waiting for HD PVR or HD DVD?

The 40K has DTS but there is only one movie title.
You won't be recording any HD unless your STB has a 1394 source.

Hey Richard, I didn't know that D-Theater exceeds HD by a third. That's amazing. I do have a firewire connection on my Comcast Motorola box. Where did you hear about the refurbished units, and, sounds like that could be very risky, yes?
Do you actually have one of the JVC units? I'd love to hear from any that do; pros, cons, etc. What about the other options? Too expensive and/or too long from now?

Dont quote me on this. Richard would be the pro, but all STB with Firewire only allow recording of OTA. Not sure about your Cable STB, but I have heard that many if not all cable STB boxes with Firewire output, arent functional. The output line is there but does not work. I can not speak from experience but this is what I have learned from many of the threads.

>> I do have a firewire connection on my Comcast Motorola box.
It sure looks a lot like USB - are you sure?
If you do I doubt it works because if it did there are thousands who would want it!
>>Where did you hear about the refurbished units, and, sounds like that could be very risky, yes?
Should be able to find them on line. Risky? Thought they came with a one year warranty but check on that. An extended warranty could make up for your concern.
>>Do you actually have one of the JVC units?
D-Theater is the only perfect delivery we have at this time. A jaw dropping experience!
If you have the disposable income you won't be disappointed. If you are conservative then wait for a PVR or HD-DVD.

Really. First I have heard that. I wonder if they are not seeing the USB thinking it is 1394.

Richard...you have mentioned that without the firewire interface that you can not record HD on the JVC unit. Could you explain how the interfaces are made with this unit. I have a Mitsubishi 48511 which does have 3 1394 connectors. I get my HD programming from 2 sources. One is Comcast cable via their SA 3100HD digital box and the second is via an outdoor antenna I have to pick up the CBS affiliate which Comcast does not carry. I use this a lot since the best quality comes via this method. What would I hook up to the JVC unit..a cable from the TV to the VCR with the 1394 cable ? Does that allow recording to what ever is being displayed on the TV regardless of signal source ? My signal sources are selected by switches within the Mitsubishi. And am I correct in assuming that the 1394 interface carries both video and audio info ?
Now what about playback of a recorded segment ? Does the 1394 cable work bi-directionally or is there an additional interface from VCR to TV ? Or since the VCR is capable of recording non-HD programs as well, are multiple output interfaces required...one to handle the traditional analog programs and another for HD programs.
Thanks for your help with this. Hate to buy a unit like this and then discover it can't be used easily.

Richard, it output on the Comcast Motorola STB says 1394, and I did have a long conversation with a tech at Crutchfield about it- he seemed to think it was ready to go, but he may have just been looking for the sale, I don't know.
Paul, there are a few VCRs that are available now that can record and playback HD programming, and, from what I've heard, they work quite well. The JVC models also playback D-Theater titles, and these are even sharper than DVD. Look for the JVC HM-DH30000 and/or the JVC HM-DH40000 for more info.
