At the present time there are no DVD machines available that will play HD material, let alone record it. Hopefully in the next year some will be introduced. An HD blue laser system is selling in Japan, but it is incompatible with our systems. There are DVD players that will output 720p and 1080i, but their storage resolution is 480.

HD DVD Recording (well, kind of)

I'm currently using a Motorola 5100 for HDTV service from Comcast, and I have a Panny DMR-E50 DVD recorder. Now I cannot record the HDTV channels in HD format, but I do get exceptionally clean 480i through the s-video connection, which yields very very good DVD recordings. In many cases it is difficult to tell the difference between an original DVD and one I recorded from an HD channel (Other than the lack of 5.1 audio of course). Anyway, I know it's not a true HD recording solution but I've been very surprised with the quality it yields. Hope this helps ...
