I just hooked up a Hughes HTL-HD with an OTA Antenna. CBS, and NBC come in at 1080i in full 16:9, but ABC comes in at 720p and has vertical bars. THe pic size is bigger then 4:3, but far less then 16:9. I'm using the EZ DVI setting, but changing formats on the receiver doesn't change the pic size.

I also can't change the TV pic size. On 1080 or 4801 broadcasts, my Toshiba 65HDX82 lets me select natural, 3 theater wides, or full. On the 720p broadcast I get not available.

It will come in that way when a show is "not" broadcast in HD...however you'll notice that a following show that DOES come in in HD will fill the entire screen. If the show doesn't specify with a (HD) next to the caption, then it's not in HD....I have the same tv, and I have the Toshiba dst3000 reciever and after reading your post I went and checked it out...It had slim bars on the sides on the show that "did not" have HD in the menu and then when a sit com came on "with" HD in the Menu it filled the screen...So all shows are not in high def...they're just digital.

Thanks for the response. Something else happened lsat night on ER. The receiver said 1080i, but in the first scene there was a very large blue "e" in the upper right hand part of the screen. The next scene, the e was gone, but the pic had very thin bars on the side. Next scene had a very thin black band all around the picture, top/bottom and sides, and the sound was a fraction of a second off.

I'm getting this all OTA, is this just the signal or do I have something set up wrong. Thanks.

Yeah, what was the deal with that 'e' in the upper right? It looked like it had a red Canada maple leaf in it.

I thought for a moment that they had begun to simucast HDTV here in Canada (CTV HD is now carrying programs like ER in HDTV), but then I noticed that the commercials were still American.

After the commercial break they went to a 16:9 letterbox format - it was still widescreen but with black all around (Star Choice from Detroit & Bell ExpressVu from Boston). I gave up on it, but caught the very end - it was back to full 16:9 (black only at top and bottom). Very strange!

From a posting on avsforums... the blue "e" seen on ER last night is logo for Canadian company that creates the on screen "bugs" we all hate. The "e" was displayed by accident and was removed part way into ER. Kevin

The "bugs" are the logos/graphics/junk that networks show in corner of the screen. Hate them. Kevin
