ABC started showing NHL games this afternoon..the teams you saw were regionally picked..all were non HD.....however while watching the Rangers vs Islanders game, one of the announcers said "if you have never seen a Hockey game in HD, you have just got to check it out"...he went on to describe just how great hockey looks in HD........well isn't that what we want ABC!!!!!!.......show us the game in HD......don't tell us what we are missing because your telecast is not HD

So does NESN. I was switching back and forth once when they both were televising the same game. The HDNet game was 13-14 seconds delayed. By the time I stopped cheering after a goal, I still had time to see it again (live?) on HDNet.

Guys, your missing the point of this topic. We all know there's hockey on HDNET and ESPNHD, but not everyone gets those channels. Its bad enough that ABC didn't broadcast the games in HD when they have the ability, but they had to go rub it in everyone face by saying that you should watch this game in HD. That was very poor announcing. You don't talk about how great something is if you aren't able to show it. Next time, show the game in HD and THEN talk about how great this picture looks.

Exactly. I was bitterly dissapointed when it came up in SD the other day. I was hoping after last year that ABC wouldn't do things on the cheap again. After all, doesn't it want to promote it's product in the best light? And what of the NHL? Shouldn't they be proactive in helping ABC present their product in the best possible way?
I was counting on ABC to show the game in HD because I can't get the Rangers in HD. While it's true that various cable systems like Cablevision and NESN carry local games in HD, it's ONLY for their subscribers. Everyone else is left out in the cold. HDNET has games too, but they are out of town games.
It's still the stone age out there.

Were the announcers for ABC the same ones who will be doing the NHL games on ESPNHD? Even if they weren't, I'm sure that they were setting up the future HD games on ESPN. They are the same company! Didn't ABC run NHL playoff games in HD last year? I'm sure I saw hockey in HD last year that wasn't on HDNet.
The NHL in HD does look terrific. It's so good that even when HDNet shut off the announcers in favor of just having rink mikes for sound, it was still very appealing, unlike NFL football when they tried the same technique.

It may be semantics, but, ABC and ESPN are NOT the same company. They are two separate companies owned by Disney. They do NOT cross each other's boundaries, it would be an accounting nightmare. Announcers do not have a contract with Disney, they are contracted with either ABC or ESPN.
That said, Disney DID take the ESPN HD trailer that was contracted to show the Peach Bowl and had it moved over to the Sugar Bowl to use for ABC's HD telecast.

The problem with the NHL on HDNET is that if it is for your local team it is blacked out. It is really frustrating to get excited about watching your local heroes in the wonderful brilliance of HD only to see a black screen which says "NOT AVAILABLE IN YOUR AREA".
Thanks a lot Fox SportsNet.
