I have decided to go the HDTV route. I have ordered a Sony 300 receiver and have been told by Direct TV that I need to purchase an off-air antenna. We live in the country 60+ miles from Memphis, the city from which our local channels are broadcast. Does anyone have any suggestions or knowledge about the signal strength of the Memphis towers or a recommendation as to which antenna I should purchase?

Go to antennaweb.org - that will tell you the various stations in your area and their location, and which channel they're broadcasting on. If all your channels are 10 or higher you can probably get good results with a Channel Master 4228 and a 7777 pre-amp. There is also a recommended Winegard model but I don't remember the number (PR-9028??). The 4228 should be around $50 and the 7777 around $75. Make sure to use RG-6 Quad Shield Coax.

If you are beginning an antenna project, you should check out http://www.hdtvprimer.com/ISSUES/erecting_antenna.html .
