Gateway is advertising a 56in DLP set for $2999. Seems like a pretty good price for that size TV considering Sammy 43's go for 3500. Any ideas on the quality of the Gateway DLP product?
My suggestion would be to call gateway and find out where they sell them and then go look at one in person...Also for that price it probably doesn't have I-link...[IEEE-1394 conection]

You'll find that this set is too new for a lot of people to have experience with it, especially any long term history. What I can tell you, is that my neighbor bought a Gateway 42" Plasma over a year ago and has had nothing but trouble with it. Don't know if it's worth anything in this case...

I don't know how accurate this is but I just read something that said the Gateway Plasma TVs were not HD. I'd be cautious as the price is very low. Here is the link to the NY Times article.

I think some are and some aren't. Be very careful especially when buying a Gateway.

It is a 1280X720 display. It is HD.

The DLP is but not all of the Gateway plasmas are HD. Only two models are: the 42" for $4500 and the 50" for $6K. The cheaper ones are ED - 480 lines only.
You get what you pay for.

You're right. Most Plasma vendors offer ED versions of their product, but for some reason Gateway gets beat up a bit because of the way they market theirs. I have not really noticed that much of a difference between the way they do it versus most other retailers.

I agree - they all market them that way. People hear plasma and automatically think HD since the one they saw on display somewhere was probably HD showing HD material. Then they see the ad for $2500 or less and think they're getting the same thing. I saw two plasma monitors at Sam's Club the other day - one ED and one HD. The difference was obvious.
