To be honest, and fair, I could care less about the Super Bowl. But It does provide us with one nice caveat, cool commercials.

Last year some friends came over and we watched a little bit of the beginning just to see the HD, but then turning on the exceedingly more exciting Star Wars Episode I.

Still, I have no plans for Sunday, and we might could see what the marketeers have in store for us. For me this would be especially cool if the commercials were in HD.

So, uh, anybody know if the commercials will be in HD?

I seriously doubt they will be, but I can't hurt to ask.

(OK, OK, Starwars was for the kids)

I read that they requested HD commercials from the advertisers but not all of them are complying. I'm guessing some will be but most will not.

Episode 1 - Exciting? Oh my........

I don't know anything about the HD commercials, but I just can't get too excited over the Super Bowl commercials anymore. They've been pretty stale over the last few years. As much as it goes against everything I believe in, I'm probably skipping much of the big game on Sunday and checking out all the fantastic HD programming that DiscoveryHD and INHD have planned for Sunday. Extreme Martial Arts looks awesome! And INHD has the full day devoted to IMAX films that I haven't seen before.

It's not the agencies decision

It's not up to the advertising agencies to decide whether HD versions of commercials are available to CBS for the Super Bowl. To make HD versions, the agencies clients have to approve the additional costs to make it happen.

There is about a 20-25% premium to make 16x9 HD versions of the spots you will see on the SB. Any film used must be transferred in HD; all graphics and special effects must be done on an HD workstation; all editing must be HD; and, the sound should be in 5.1 surround.

We offered several agencies the opportunity to create HD versions of any spots that they may be running on the Super Bowl. None took us up on it, even if we waived the 25% upcharge. They preferred to just let the network uprez their spots in 4x3.

At the same time that the Super Bowl was approaching, the Detroit Auto Show was also taking place. Amazingly enough, many presentations for that show WERE completed in High Def.

Go figure!
