... Having sat down with my wife and kids.... (including my 10 year-old son and his 10 year old friend....) TO WATCH ON MY 55 INCH MITS... WITH TEH SONY 5.1 DIALED UP... I wasn't quite pre-pared for the over-the air fare CBS offered in both commercials... and Half-TIME entertainment.
THe pictures and coverage of the game was excellent... and normally I could care less about the half-time entertainment.... but becasue it was in HD......WE WATCHED
Needless to say...the program is NOT a family afair and I am filing complaints to the NFL, CBS, and the FCC.
If I knew WHAT was coming... I would have sent my son out... THere are certain movies... programs, etc. that we watch in HD... that are not KID appropriate.
Maybe I am saying all this to say.... Had the Breast Not been so promenently dsiplayed in 1080i... My son... his freind... and the rest of the family WOULDN'T have noticed it!!!! (all the dry-humping... was also disgusting... AND SOME COMMERCIALS VERY SUGESTIVER..... but not quite so blatant!!!!)
Has all this been going on in 480i on OTA broadcasting... and I just couldn't see it???... or didn' notice ????

I think they are starting to push the envelope more than before. But how can you blame anyone except Janet Jackson? How could the network or NFL know that was going to happen? Sue her.

What's the big deal in North America about nudity! It was only a breast, not total nudity.
Violence has a far, far more bad influence on children and it is everywhere - in your movies, on your television programs and particularly in your games. No wonder the United States is such violent country.
If you really want to protect your children, then go after the studios and the game manufacturers. A bare breast is not going to make your child a juvenile delinguent.

I was kidding around with the friends who came over that we were going to see Janet in Hi-Def at half-time and that she was going to show us her_ _ _s.....one of the girls said"how come it was bouncing so much"....guess once that much silicone starts shaking it's like a runaway train
and how awful was the music and the lyrics of the songs..............Geez, who put this one together in the first place
but.....not only was CBS'S 1080i telecast fantastic....the game itself was absolutely great......way to go CBS, Pats, and Panthers!!!!!

I couldn't agree more with HiDefBob, above. More breasts, less gunshot wounds.
Half-time sucked. What on earth was MTV thinking!? I was remarking that if those acts had had to actually audition in order to appear in the Super Bowl XXXVIII half-time performance they would not have made the cut.

So, Janet J's partial disrobing was an accident? Like Dr. Evil said,"rrightt...."
The whole show was over the top. I remember some classy half time shows from several years ago and this piece of trash was something MTV would have past over. The breast thing didn't bother me as much as the whole presentation that was tawdry, cheap and tacky. The worst was the lyrics to some of the alleged songs and the movements of the participants. In all a deplorable performance.

It was bad but remember that MTV and CBS have the same owner..Viacom. I don't think we will see too much of that stuff next year. Beyonce was the only one to do a good job.
It's what you get when you hire MTV. Nobody over 40 could relate.

Bob L. and Jim A.,
I agree that violence is more damaging than nudity, however I feel that what was presented Sunday indicates that MTV has a total lack of respect for the audience. This was broadcast TV, not a cable show, and it is probably the most viewed show of the year, and IMO, the organizers have a responsibility to show discretion in the material presented: there should not be any shocking suprises.
If I am watching CSI, I can reasonably expect blood and injuries.
If I am watching HBO at 3:00am, I can reasonably expect nudity and language.
But if I am sitting with my family watching what was arguably the best Superbowl in over a decade, I expect to see football, and some funny commercials. No boobs, butts, or flatulent farm animals. Now I am not particularly against boobs, butts, or gross humor, but there is time for it - and there are other times when it should NOT be presented, or at least toned down.
This was just plain rude. I'd like to see them get fined. How about $1.00 for every viewer who had to watch it and the money goes to HD development
BTW Hugh, I'm under 40 and I was still offended by the half time show. Not because I am sensitive or prudish, but because I had to explain to my seven year old why the naked man was on the field. And my son's 15 year old girl friend was rather embarrased by Janet's floppy part.
I think professional sports should be good family entertainment, showcasing the talent and athletic ability resulting from years of dedication and practice.
But that's just my opinion, and apparently I am wrong.

...And one other point that disturbs me and seems to be overlooked- the bare breast is not the real issue, it’s the lack of respect and mistreatment of another person. If Janet would’ve revealed herself , ala a Jim Morrison move (ask Hugh who he is), on her own, rather than Justin groping her, this would’ve been an entirely different situation.
But because a guy "molested" a girl-- and exposed her--this should be the focus of any discussion. I think it’s more important to explain to the children who unfortunately witnessed this event- to respect each other. It’s not a puritan issue, its an issue of respect.
And kudos to our crack super bowl homeland security team- no dirty bombs made it through, just a boob and a streeker.
By the way- awesome game! HD coverage was superb. Condolences to Mark, Hugh and all the Carolina fans. Both teams were warriors to the final second.

I agree with Bob.
Larry - I would agree with you too if Janet had not been in on it. She was (it was probably her idea) and she obviously prepared for it ahead of time with a strategic coverup. Had it even appeared to be involuntary on her part I would agree with you.

It was a great game. Funny thing is I left the room during halftime to check on my daughter and missed the Janet Jackson stunt.

...not necessarily to change your mind-- but to make sure that my previous post was clear....
Yes, we now know that Janet was in on it, she’s already admitted it. Her lewd behavior and any issue regarding her "punishment" is not the focus of my point.
My gripe is that a guy grabbed at a girl's top exposing her. This is a violation of the girl. This is an act that shouldn’t be tolerated. Regardless of whether it were the two entertainers performing, or if it were two other people in a real situation. This is not the kind of behavior that should be promoted or condoned, especially during prime time and on broadcast television.
But enough soap boxing… at least for me… geeze, this thread is starting to drift away from the tete-a-tete of HD to DD.

No problem - we're just seeing it from slightly different perspectives. You see a guy taking off a girl's top. I saw a girl exposing herself with a guy's help.
Either way it's not good.

You need to watch a very eye opening movie called "Bowling for Columbine" by Micheal Moore who gives his thoughts and facts and research about "gunshots", and "game violence" then maybe it may think about things a little more.
Eventhough it was Janet Jackson's boob she's not that hot I would have rather seen Jessica simpsons boob, anyway just another Jckson that needs to draw attention to themselves, she could of jumped on an SUV in traffic and showed her boob.

Grumpy_Bob, you said it best and I'm glad to hear the under 40 crowd didn't like it either. I thought the HalfTime show was about as bad as anything I've seen or heard at a Super Bowl half time. But what do you expect when you have that particular group of people together on stage. MTV shows this type of stuff all the time so if you hire them to do the show what does anyone with a brain expect to see. I'm no prude and since I have no children at home it was just wasted space for me but it sends all the wrong messages to the youth of this country.
As to Michael Moore.......he is a jerk and a scumbag in my opinion. If you read about his book and movie you will find out that he took many liberties with the truth. Again it is just my opinion but Columbine happened because of the parents and no one else.

I still think the reaction to the Janet Jackson incident is way over the top. It was so blantant and prolonged that I missed it! It certainly didn't come close to indecent exposure. In most Europe I am sure that it would have got a big yawn. A Federal investigation ... give me a break. Here in Canada, everyone I have talked to (men and women) have just laughed at the whole incident and the aftermath.
There are far more pressing issues with regard to the country's youth that a very brief exposure to a breast.
1. Bullying is out of control in the schools. This is something that happens every school day to hundreds of youngsters. It is only a matter of time before one of these victims is going to do another "Columbine"
2. Children are playing video games everyday that glorify violence. Kill, kill, kill ... good guys, bad guys it doesn't make any difference. They are being desensitize to violence.
3. Children are being exposed to music with lyrics that are violent, racist and use profanities.
I think everyone ... including the government ... should be focusing their energies more on the above issues than this silly incident ... that is just my opinion.

Ok, Janet Jackson showed her breast! And you think that your kids have never seen a breast before? All of the sudden now parents, politicians, and execs are screaming for blood. We all are acting like this stuff never happens. Get real, it happens all around you. No one is talking about the explicit lyrics of Nelly and P. Diddy in the act before her. No one is talking about the American Flag that Kid Rock was wearing as a poncho. What about the video games and the music videos that our youth are already playing? Are parents really that out of touch with what they think kids today have already been exposed to? This is the 21st century and daytime tv has been selling sex for years. Nightime tv is worse. Parents listen to the lyrics of your childs song once, or watch a video. It's an MTV world. I have an 11 yr old, and I have educated her so that stuff like this doesn't seem so cheap and suprising. She realizes what she did and why she did it. It's all showbusiness. Parents need to talk to there children and explain to them that stuff like this will happen in life. Prepare them for it, it's not going away. Education is key.

Gee Other-Bob, since you want to be an expert on what is happening in MY back yard, let me tell you a few points:
1) Don't believe everything you see on the news. Apparently you've seen a few to many documentaries on the "horror of American life". It's actually pretty nice here. You're from Canada, right? Must be your whiney French blood...*
2) The reports of bullying in school are very short sighted. Kids have been kids for decades. Unfortunately, some parents are not preparing their children to deal with life, and they lash out in response.
3) Neither of my children, nor any of their friends, play video games. They are too busy with sports, and generally LIVING life, not watching it. Granted, they do watch movies and some TV, and even the seven year old recognizes and prefers HD to SD. As far as violence, the same seven year old girl has her own .22 rifle, kept in a safe, and obviously used only under my supervision. It's in our Constitution. My Dad had one too. He also grew up watching westerns, where one race always killed the other race. He went to Vietnam and Iraq. Yet, he is still a very peaceful man. Golly, I just can't explain that.
4) Regarding music, my 16 year old can listen to whatever he wants, but my seven year has her CDs screened. There is a big difference between which types of content that each kid is currently prepared for.
Donald,
My kids have seen a breast since 30 seconds after they were born. Heck, it was their primary food source at first. They've also been taught that there is a time and place for it. But EVERYTHING about the Superbowl half time show was in poor taste and timing, including all of the other items you mentioned. The Jackson stunt was just the last straw. I try to be tolerant of anybody's choice of self expression, but that was just too far. Sometimes it takes just such an event to get people to speak up.
I do not agree that it is an MTV world. There are still plenty of people out there that will not agree to accept trash as entertainment, even if it is served in High Definition.
* PS. I proactively apologize for the " whiney French blood" comment in item #1. It was a keyboard malfunction . See HiDefBob; it's irritating when somebody does something inappropriate and purposefully obnoxious, just to get attention!

I think (hope) we can all agree that
a) it was inappropriate given the type of show and time. It was a cheap headline grabber and nothing more than self-promotion for her new album. The artists and everyone involved should be fined or otherwise punished.
b) it's not that big of a deal. You can see more than that on a public beach or at your neighborhood pool. Frankly I find the crotch grabbing much more offensive than a bare boob with covered nipple. I'm not saying it's right or should be ignored but it's not worth the attention that people are giving it.

Had there been a HD replay of the Jackson event, how many of you would have turned it off? Where's the sky cam when you need it? I found CBS's shortage of HD cameras much more distracting and aggravating that evening than the 3 second partial boob shot. Now let me get back to HDNet Bikini Destinations which is all in HD.

I, for one, struggle to see the practical difference between Jackson's little stunt and the pre-game commercials that showed Britteny Spears in a see-through bodysuit making her appear completely nude except for a few well-placed shiny pearls (or diamonds?). You remember, the one where she's crawling on the floor like some kind of sex slave?
Both of them had (seemingly) covered nipples, but it was Jackson who took the heat.

I'm from Canada too and had HiDefBob asked me, I would have told him that IMO the half-time show and the two J's stunt was completely INAPPROPRIATE there, at that time and in that place.
Thanks for your well expressed thoughts on this issue Grumby Bob. Count me in your camp.

It's not for YOU ar Janet Jackson to decide what's good for someone else's kids. It's one thing to do this kind of thing in an arena where it is KNOWN what's to be expected, quite another to do it in such a public place!

It's sad to see this for the NFL. It's bad enough that so many players "dance around" after making routine plays and now the "Jackson" fiasco. Hopefully the NFL will stop becoming the next "world wide wrestling" show.... As for the "Jackson family" they will continue to get airtime as along as consumers buy their latest "hits". I really don't understand or want to understand "Michael Jackson", from what I've seen he really doesn't impress me... I feel sad when I see his face concealed with sunglasses. This past superbowl, although a fantastic game, is now marred by alleged "pop entertainers". I saw previous posts on the forum regarding how much $ people spend per month on cable\sat\direct tv. The halftime show is just another example of why I get OTA which costs $0 per month....LOL...
