LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- The original "Star Wars" trilogy, one of the most-requested DVD episodic film franchises, is expected to be released as a four-disc DVD box set September 21.
A global rollout on DVD is expected within days of the domestic release, according to Lucasfilm Ltd. and 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment.
The trilogy, featuring the classic franchise films "Star Wars," "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi," will be released on three DVD discs, with a fourth disc likely to hold a newly made documentary about the "Star Wars" franchise and never-before-seen footage, among several other bonus materials, said Jim Ward, Lucasfilm's VP of marketing and distribution and the DVD trilogy's executive producer.
"We are currently in the process of restoring and remastering all three titles for the DVD release, so we're still working on details of the marketing strategy," Ward said. "But I believe that it is safe to say that it will receive tremendous exposure across all media."
Lucasfilm and Fox chose the September release date to maximize on holiday gift buying during the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment president Mike Dunn said.
"We sold about 17 million VHS 'Star Wars' units during two fall release periods in '95 and '97," he said.
Combining huge consumer demand for the "Star Wars" franchise with being first out of the gate during the busy fourth-quarter home video market, Fox and Lucasfilm are hoping to cash in on DVD sales throughout the holidays and up until the theatrical release of "Star Wars: Episode III," which is set for release nationwide May, 25, 2005, Dunn and Ward said.
Each of the three films in the "Star Wars Trilogy" has been digitally restored and remastered for sound and picture quality, Ward said.
"First and foremost, the DVDs will deliver the very best possible sound and picture and take advantage of everything the medium can offer," Ward said. "On top of that, we are creating added-value material that gets inside the creation of the 'Star Wars' films in a fresh and fun way. We want watching this DVD collection to be as memorable as seeing the movies for the first time."
The films of the "Star Wars Trilogy" will be sold exclusively as a collection at a still-to-be-determined retail price and not separately, Fox executives said. However, retailers have been known to break up DVD box sets and sell individual titles after the first month out on store shelves.

M children...will be very excited. They keep asking why they can't get the "originals" on DVD. They don't even assume that you can get it on video (although I have told them that). Star Wars on video? no no no, DVD.
I will have to buy a set for...my children...when it comes out, yeah, that's it, my wife will have to agree.

I thought the "Superbit" name (capitalized) belongs to Columbia-Tristar. These, instead will be Twentieth Century Fox. Now, they may choose to dedicate space to detail and use the higher bit rate, since the extras are apparently on the fourth DVD, but knowing 20CFox, I wouldn't count on it. We probably get 6 foreign languages, comment tracks by 4 guys we never heard of before, and a 6 hour "The making of the marketing of Star Wars"
I'll still buy it.

Lucasfilm's Vice President of Marketing and Distribution, Jim Ward has confirmed that these will not be SuperBit discs, however each disc will only have one movie on it to take advantage of higher bit rates (although a commentary track will also be present). All supplements will all be on disc 4. The trilogy will only be sold as a 4-disc set.
Also, the release is of the 1997 "special edition" Star Wars trilogy, not the unaltered originals. Also, these are not the "Ultimate Edition" versions that so many had hoped for.
Yes, folks, Greedo still shoots first. And "Greed-O" George Lucas is only just beginning. You can bet once he's made his millions on this release, he will release the original trilogy and make more millions, and then release some form of "ultimate" edition and make even more millions. Then he'll release all six films as the "Lucasfilm Diamond Galaxy Official Edition" in HD when that format finally arrives.
So save your money, folks

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for the original theatrical versions of the holy trilogy. Lucas has never bent over backwards to please the fans. He knows very well that there is a large number of fans who want the theatrical releases, but has never even hinted that they will be released. Lucas seems bent on improving (his words) the originals and giving us what he wants.
I'm not saying it won't ever happen, but I don't think Lucas cares what we think. That said, I will purchase the SE Trilogy. I don't think there are too many terrible changes. I would like the originals, but the SE's are better than nothing. I refuse to watch my VHS tapes on my HDTV (they look terrible). The only scene that really bugs me is the Greedo shooting first, but other than that it's mostly stupid CGI effects added.
So he'll get my money in September and if he ever releases the originals he'll get even more of my money. I've bought Ep1 and Ep2 and I'll buy Ep3. I'll probably buy the 10 disk super extended special improved edition in the limited edition Death Star packaging. I'd buy the X-mas with the Ewok special too. And then I'll rebuy them all on HD-DVD someday (I hope). Those of us who love StarWars will buy whatever George sells. I guess that makes me a fanboy, but I can live with that. I'm just glad that some version of the trilogy is coming to DVD so my kids can watch it and fall in love like I did.
