I have an Imac that i would like to listen to thru my stereo. i have a mini jack adapter that i plug into my headphones jack and hook RCA cables up to my stereo and that works, but it sounds like crap. the bass is very loud and voices are not very loud at all. so it doesnt make for pleasant listening. anyone had any ideas on how i can get better sound quality out of my computer? i seen a monster cable that does pretty much the same thing, but didnt know if that would make it sound that much better or not.

You should probably get a better sound card with RCA or digital audio outputs and good quality cables. Which headphone jack were you using?
I only have one headphone jack on my imac which is in the back of the computer. So if i stick with that will it always sound bad, or if i get the moster cables will they sound much better?

Better cables might help but what you really need is a line level output. The headphone jack is not line level so that may be part of the problem. Make sure the volume is turned down and see if there are any audio settings on the computer that might affect the sound (bass, treble, tone, equalization, etc.).

The best PC audio comes from an external D/A convertor. The PC itself is a very RF noisy environment that is great for digital but tends to degrade analog.

If so, there are external USB-connected soundcards out there.
The Sounblaster Extigy is one. I can't vouch for the sound quality, but I've read some reviews and I'm fairly sure that it'll be a lot better than using the headphone minijack port.
There may be firewire soundcards as well, I just haven't seen any.
Good luck,
Aaron

I have my computer hooked up to my receivers usb audio in jack...If your receiver doesn't have that input and you listen through your computer alot, I would recommend buying a receiver with usb audio in.

You will need to use a full speed usb cable...the cable will have A type on the end going to your computers usb out and the other end of the cable will be B type, which will plug into your receivers usb in audio jack...This function has been confirmed to work with Windows 98, 2000, Windows Me and Windows XP operating signals...(not sure about Mac)...at any rate, turn the volume on max and control the Volume from the receiver.

It's a USB sound amp/device that supports a variety of sound input/output. You can run analog RCA cables to/from your receiver. You can even connect non-amplified speakers to it (great use for those old stereo speakers). I've used it with a Mac. They say it is also compatible with USB-equipped PCs.
They also make a cheaper product called the iMic ($39). It's also USB but does not have amplification and only supports mini-jacks. I have not tried it.
The new Mac G5s come with built-in digital optical audio in and out. They can connect directly with a receiver that has optical audio ports.
