One more thing ... How and why does calibration lengthen the life of the cathod ray tubes in a big screen t.v.?

This one you can do yourself with a calibration DVD. You need to set the contrast to it's linear output. The DVD will tell you how to do this. Most displays have a film/theater mode that ball parks the controls. Use those settings and tweak it with the DVD.

The calibration will reduce how hard the blue is being pushed but that does not play nearly as a big a role as getting the contrast turned down.
