I've read the threads on new DVD players coming out and there is a lot of positive press about the new Panasonic DVD player soon to come out (the S79 I think) in addition to the various other new DVD players with DVI and HDMI. I'm leaning towards the Panasonic but can't seem to find out whether it actually upconverts to 720p. The Panasonic press releases describe it as having "advanced progressive scanning" but with no actual mention of upconversion. The Amazon product listing does not mention it either but it does clearly state that the Samsung DVD player with DVI upconverts to 720p. I'm interested in getting the best picture possible for my HDTV so this is important. Does anyone know whether the Panny actually upconverts to 720p? If not, will the "advanced progressive scanning" with the HDMI interface provide for a picture likely to be as good as the competing Samsung and Bravo players?

If it has DVI I would be shocked if it did not support both 720P and 1080I.

Thanks for the response Richard! I suspect that Panasonic is perhaps being more careful than others in practicing truth in advertising since its truly not an HD DVD player. They seem to prefer to talk about advanced progressive scanning as opposed to upconverting to 720P.

Panasonic is a little strange in that respect. Remember the Panny rp82? Fabulous little player for an extremely low price (around $200?).
It was rumoured to have a Faroudja chipset in it that was supposed to be for far more expensive players but wound up in the rp82 by mistake. But you would be hard pressed to find that info anywhere on the box or the website, so that model became a cult classic that sold for more on the used market then the original msrp.
It seems to me that Panny's marketing dep't is not exactly in synch with it's R&D boys.
