Hi,
Anybody know anything about 240P. I know it's used in some game consoles and it's a form of 480i but I'm looking for information on it's scanning characteristics/structure compared to 480i and the differences between the two. Any info would be great..thanks.
Dave.

It sounds like 240 lines progressively scanned (240p) or exactly half the resolution of a progressive scan DVD (480p). As opposed to 480i which is 480 lines sent as 2 240 line fields.
Or were you looking for a more technical answer?

The display does not know the difference. This is accomplished by changing the start position of the scan on the video signal itself. in 480I it flips back and forth every other 60th. In 240P it stays at the same place at all times.

Does this mean that you only get 240 lines at a time visible i.e.Picture will occupy the same area on screen but every second line missing? or put another way, the progressive path now lies on either the odd or the even field?
Or
240P frame rate - 480i Field rate and say, 240p frame 1 is on odd field path on the display and 240p frame 2 is on the even path of the display?

I'm not the expert here but in both cases the entire screen is painted.
240p paints 240 lines every 60th of a second.
480i paints 240 lines every 60th of a second. Every other set of 240 lines is offset vertically by half a line which effectively doubles the number of unique lines you see but introduces interlacing artifacts.
480i will take 480 lines and break them into 2 240 line fields (Odd lines in one field, even in the other). It then paints the odd lines normally followed by a half line vertical shift and the even lines.
240p will just display 240 lines each time without the vertical shift.
I assume this is the same scenario as 1080i/540p.

Does this mean that because there is no 1/2 line offset, 240 lines are displayed progressively therefore the picture should appear smaller or there is a blank line between each horizontal trace and the picture appears as normal?

240P can look like half of 480I and yup, scan lines more visible. They are doing something with the new stuff to reduce this artifact but grab any old Super Nintendo 16 bit and it will be obvious to you.
