I have a Mits 55 inch widescreen hdtv, a toshiba dst300 receiver and a top of the line panasonic progressive scan dvd player. I would like to hookup a home threate system. Can someone give me some ideas as to what's best for my setup. I heard the onkyo s760 home theatre system is a great system. But I'm a little confuse as to what to get or if I really need to get anything. Hope this doesn't sound dumb. Will a home theatre system enhance the sporting events like the hdtv receiver did as far as sound.
Thanks in advance
Leon

I have the Onkyo 760 HTIB and I am very satisfied with it. Very economical and produces good quality for what my ear can recognize. I am not an audiophile, but I think it is a very good value. I would suggest getting a nice subwoofer cable and upgrading from the speaker wire that come with the system.

If you're not an audiophile then the HTIB systems are ok. Either way you need to listen for yourself and decide. You can also get a 5.1 (or 6.1/7.1) speaker system and separate receiver - it's not that difficult and you may find better receivers or speakers than in a HTIB setup.
Boston Acoustics speakers and a Yamaha or Denon receiver would be a good comparison for the HTIBs. You do need a subwoofer and bookshelf speakers are much better than the tiny satellite speakers. Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 are required but 6.1/7.1 is optional and not a requirement.

The reviews I've seen of the Onkyo system and the customer ratings are excellent. For the money, it sounds like an excellent buy. However, I'm not crazy about the size and style of the speakers so I would tend to defer to a sleaker looking system.
One important caveat, make sure and look for a system which has a coaxial and optical digital audio input. My current Panasonic system does not so I'm not able to take advantage of surround sound for HD broadcasts. My kids also use XBOX which also benefits from such an input. So, I need to upgrade.
A good site (my opinion) for reviews of home theatre and other electronics products is www.cnet.com
Good luck!
