There are 2 benefits from DVI (other than cabling aesthetics).
HDCP support - ability to watch HD programming with copy protection. Probably won't be widely enforced for at least a few years when the majority of sets have DVI/HDMI interfaces. Component (analog) would be down-rez'd. So it's good to have just from that standpoint.
Digital signal - this is most important if you have a digital TV (DLP, LCD, etc.) since the signal is never (?) converted to analog. If you have a CRT (like the Mits) then the DVI digital signal gets converted to analog inside the display. You may see just as good (or better) PQ with component having the STB or DVD player do the conversion to analog.
What to do? Watch DVDs and HDTV - what else?

My Mits does not have DVI but it still supports HDCP copy protection through the 1394 ports. Of course if all the players use DVI then my 1394 is useless whether it has HDCP or not.

No. What all the hoopla is about is matching the native scan rate. You will probably not see much improvement because your TV can receive the full benefit of a 480P DVD player because it has a 480P native scan rate.
