As we head into the summer I am reminded daily how television takes a back seat to the summer months! That said things are not completely dead in the world of HD and there are some dramatic changes coming ahead, at least from my perspective.
I am still working on a Waveform Review of a Samsung DLP RPTV. This review is getting so big that it will be broken down into different parts. The reason for this is digital has finally come of age due to two new display technologies. For flat panel applications it is the new generation LCD flat panels and for RPTV applications it is the new generation HD3 and HD4 imaging chips. Both technologies meet a 3 screen height viewing distance without being able to make out pixel structure or picture elements. Both are impervious to burn in. Both are in a position to lead over well known display technologies, plasma and CRT.
That’s the good news. The bad news is manufacturers continue to frustrate the videophile community by their lack of consistency in setup and performance. The display I am reviewing is absolutely great provided it has the right software. That said it is last years model line and the replacements are now hitting the floors. My calibrating colleagues are finding that the new model season lacks the same controls and features found in the display I am currently reviewing. Simply put that means the replacement models have calibration errors we cannot remove that we could just months ago. This was truly disheartening as I looked forward to recommending a number of models for you to consider that performed correctly. Cross your fingers; it is not over with yet and the calibration community may yet find solutions or the manufacturer may get involved and make these adjustments available again.
