"Why are places that sell you cheap airline tickets called bucket shops."

The dry bushel is the common unit of measure for all trading on the floor of the Chicago Board of Trade for wheat, and has been so since 1848.

However, brokers traded unofficially in the street outside the Chicago Board of Trade. Although the unit of measure was still the dry bushel, not the dry bucket, the place in the street where such unofficial brokers traded was called the "bucket shop" because the trades were usually smaller than those on the floor of the Chicago Board of Trade.

The term "bucket shop" soon became attached not only to all unofficial brokers outside official commodity exchanges, but also to any sort of unofficial shop. Places that sell you airline tickets below their face value, are not part of the official setup of any airline. They and similar places are "bucket shops" dealing with paper credit for debts of either real property or personal property.

Hello xcole and welcome. I respect your encyclopedic historical knowledge concerning non-decimal systems of units, colored though it is by your strong opinions.

You have so far not written about post-metric systems: those developed by scientists to replace metric. George Johnstone Stoney 1876, "On the Physical Units of Nature" and Max Planck 1899 were the first that I know of.

The main focus of this board is intended to be fully decimal alternatives to metric---systems in which the main natural constants (c, hbar, G, Boltzmann's k, e) are powers of ten.

It may be necessary, or for the best anyway, to consolidate your posts in a single thread, if you contribute more, as sequels of this one. I had not heard this explanation of the term "bucket shop" by the way.
