Actually, there is no proof that biblically or historically Mary Magdalene was a prostitute. There IS a prostitute who, in the Bible, goes to Jesus and washes his feet with her hair and anoints them, but that is NOT Mary Magdalene. The prostitute has no name. The one who anoints Jesus feet and head with the spikenard is Mary of Bethany who is sometimes interchanged with Mary Magdalene so they could be one and the same person.
Mary Magdalene was actually part of a group of female disciples who followed Jesus and the Apostles around as they preached. Whenever this group of women is mentioned, Mary Magdalene is also mentioned first, which some scholars suggest, indicate her importance. There have even been some scholars who have suggested that Jesus and Mary Magdalene may have been married. This is not widely accepted, obviously, but it's certainly interesting.
I just finished reading this historical Jesus fiction novel called Testament by Nino Ricci and in the book, Jesus is criticized by the higher-ups for having this band of women follow him, citing it as improper and suggesting that these women were his "concubines". So maybe the line change reflects the fact that Mary M was NOT a prostitute, but was accused of being a concubine because she and these other women followed Christ in his ministry at a time when women were supposed to do little else, but marry and have babies. Since it was improper for women to follow a group of men across the country, they were accused wrongly of being concubines. Maybe the line change is just keeping in line with biblical research.
