Man o' War's original barn in Maryland

by Mitch

I just got back from visiting Man o' War's original barn at the Riddle Farm in Berlin, Maryland (there have been other postings about this farm, most recently by Ol' Line Rebel May 24, 2002). It was amazing! For those MOW fans who haven't been there, GO NOW- especially since development of the land for condos is already underway. The name of the developer is "Centex Homes," and they obviously do not care that the property they are destroying was home to the greatest racehorse to ever live. It was MOW's home while he was racing (Faraway Farm, in Kentucky, did not become his home until he retired). As referenced in the article that Ol' Line Rebel cites, the arch still remains outside of MOW's barn, and it still clearly says "Man o' War." It is incredible. The farm is located just a mile or so from the racetrack formerly known as Delmarva Downs (I think it's now called Ocean Downs). If you are on Route 50 East, make a left on Racetrack Road (Route 589), and quick right onto Old Route 50. There is a Walmart and Home Depot on the other side of the road. The road that leads to the farm is beautiful and tree-lined and has a "no trespassing" sign at the entrance. I went last Saturday (Memorial Day week-end)and there was absolutely no one around. I'd be interested to hear from those of you that have been there or have questions. P.S. Visiting Faraway Farm was an unbelievable experience, too.
