To our knowledge the mile and 5/8th record still stands, then again we don't have many 1 5/8 mile races here in the U.S. If i rememer right, the 1 5/8th miles race you're talking about is the Lawrence Realization right? I've seen it still be raced today, but it was shortened to 1 1/2 miles instead. So even though MoW's record for the 1 5/8 miles distance still stands here in the U.S. as far as I know, the time for the Realization may have no doubt changed because of the distance change. It still bugs me today that they changed the distance in that race, I wish they had kept it that length, just to be able to see if the horses today could cope with such an unusual distance like their ancestors could.
