Welcome to the board

Hi Katherine and welcome to the board. To our knowledge the mile and 5/8th record still stands, then again we don't have many 1 5/8 mile races here in the U.S. If i rememer right, the 1 5/8th miles race you're talking about is the Lawrence Realization right? I've seen it still be raced today, but it was shortened to 1 1/2 miles instead. So even though MoW's record for the 1 5/8 miles distance still stands here in the U.S. as far as I know, the time for the Realization may have no doubt changed because of the distance change. It still bugs me today that they changed the distance in that race, I wish they had kept it that length, just to be able to see if the horses today could cope with such an unusual distance like their ancestors could.

Again welcome to the board :-)
