The Belmont stakes is the most frequently run stakes race in America. This year will be the 137th running. The Travers at Saratoga has been run 135 times so far.
Perry Belmont( the last living son of August Belmont II) in 1938, donated to Belmont Park, the iron gates that were at Jerome Pk in 1867 when the first Belmont Stks was run. On those gates is a depiction of Ruthless winning the FIRST Belmont Stakes in 1867. These gates can still be seen on the 4th floor clubhouse of Belmont Pk.
