Dr Fager lost three times when collared. Enough said. Why did he fade to third ten lenghts out in 1967 Woodward> All time greats would win that!!!
A horse can not run on a broken leg that is swinging in the air. I have seen too much of that in my time.
He caved in three times did Dr Fager and that is why he is never placed in the same class as Secretariat, MOW etc in any opinion poll.
Secretariat and MOW faced stiffer early fractions than Dr Fager and not only won but set world records to boot.

Jacinto Vasquez was told he would lose the mount on Ruffian if he could not hold down her speed. Human design is serious part of racing. Was in her reach to equal Sec time at 1 1/2 miles Noyt needed. Stupi to try for time records when horse has won already. Not about time records
Ruffian had orders to stay near Foolish Pleasure. Leroy Jolley knew Foolish Pleasure could not wing it with Ruffian so if Mr Derby did not scratch Jolley would have scratched Foolish Pleasure.
