I don't disagree with much of what you said here. But I dont think calling Successor a cheap horse is totally accurate, he was 2 year colt of the year. By October, Dr Fager was still green as grass. Shoemaker said so upon dismounting him afterthe Cowdin. A race in which he beat In Reality and Successor. He rushed him up to catch the leaders and the horse almost ran over the horses in front of him. Causing Bill to stand up in the stirrups to check him. He won that race by 3/4's of a length. I dislike comparing horses. I hung with some old timers years back that dissed Secretariat, saying Citation would have blown him away. Well I can think of more than once I saw Sec run that they would have had a heart attack trying to beat him. Kelso? Forego? John Henry? take your pick. I saw them all and I cant be sure who would be the best horse on any given day, on any give track at any given distance.
