Maybe I am but in reading the posts here about all time greats I notice it is youngsters who were never been "burned" by that idea. No such thing as a best ever. I know the horses you praise have all been STIFFED by their people. How do you fall in love with them?
Secretariat forced to run when his people know he is out of shape.
I recall Turcotte saying "Secretariat is not himself."
The horse had a fever and was well off form, Laurin was forced to run him knowing he was not sharp BECAUSE Chenery had a TV contract with the NYRA and had to run him,so The "Greatest Ever# is defeated by Onion a horse of no distinction and that got me mad that day too.
Secretariat again is forced to run against Prove Out for the same TV contrat with the NYRA. Riva Ridge can`t stand the mud so Laurin had to insert Secretariat for Riva Ridge. Sec was ill trained for the race and lost BADLY losing by 4 or 5 points.
Embarassing yes?
The public wagered (myself included) to the tune of millions of dollars and was all lost on a horse whose people KNEW he was not fit to race.
Delp KNEW BID stepped on a safety pin and was not fit to race.
Did he scratch him? NO! Bid ran and lost but the public lost millions in bets on the *Greatest Ever* who was not FIT to race.
Seattle Slew sent west when his people knew he needed resting. He was out of shape. Public duped again from millions in bets.
Majestic Prince in 69 forced by his owner to run The Belmont when he was lame. Wtrecked his career and public again lost sucker bets on horse not fit to race.
NO such thing as a best ever and do not even think about it.
They all seem to lose. You do have a childish approach to it here missing the reality of it.
