Best Seasons of Great Horses

by Horse Race Fanatic

In another thread, I made the observation that even in a great horse’s best season, it was quite rare for the horse to go undefeated. So for those on the board who would find it interesting, here are the undefeated best seasons (3-year old seasons and up) of the horses in Blood-Horse magazine’s top 100 U.S. 20th century thoroughbreds, with a minimum of 5 races being required for listing.

1905 9- 9-0-0 Sysonby (3)
1920 11-11-0-0 Man o’War (3)
1937 8- 8-0-0 War Admiral (3)
1943 6- 6-0-0 Count Fleet (3)
1953 10-10-0-0 Tom Fool (4)
1969 8- 8-0-0 Gallant Bloom (3) (filly)
1980 9- 9-0-0 Spectacular Bid (4)
1988 7- 7-0-0 Personal Ensign (4) (filly)
1995 10-10-0-0 Cigar (5)

And that’s it.

If you expand the selection criteria to include those great horses who lost only once in their best season, you can add the following:

1930 10- 9-1-0 Gallant Fox (3)
1948 20-19-1-0 Citation (3)
1953 10- 9-1-0 Native Dancer (3)
1966 14-13-1-0 Buckpasser (3)
1968 8- 7-1-0 Dr. Fager (4)
1969 8- 7-1-1 Majestic Prince (3)
1971 8- 7-1-0 Ack Ack (5)
1975 6- 5-1-0 Ruffian (3) (filly)
1977 7- 6-0-0 Seattle Slew (3)
1984 6- 5-1-0 Slew o’Gold (4)

These lists are interesting, in part because of the great horses whose best seasons qualified them to be listed, and in part because of the great horses who were not as successful in their best seasons, who did not qualify for listing. I hope some of you find this interesting.
