wow, if you call half a second "almost clipping" his record then what do you call secretariat's 4 second demolishing of man o'wars 1 1/2 mile record? "nukeing"?
actually it says alot for secretatiat that for 30 YEARS only he and his very tough competion in Sham were able to break the 2 minute mark at the derby. that's really amazing if you think about it. and it still stands.
says alot for secretariat and the level of competition he had to deal with. makes his victories, esp. the 30+ lgth belmont victory that much more legendary.
what did monarchos do it by? by about .0000001 of a second wasn't it. all the more power to him. but i doubt if he'll pull it off (triple crown).
