Just to let everyone know, Big Brown (from a post position of 20) won the 2008 Kentucky Derby with a slight duel with Eight Bells who came in 2nd. BUT at the end of the race, Eight Bells collapsed and broke both ankles of her front legs. She had to be put down right there at the track.
Dont forget to go to Bloodhorse.com to vote for the best horse in their March into May contest to see who everyone thinks is the best. It is down to just the 2 Big REDS
War Pass, the 2007 champion two-year-old male and Bessemer Trust Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) winner, will not make a planned start in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) because of a fractured sesamoid in his left front ankle.
I just found this out today. At 5:00 not only is the Lexington Stakes (at Keeneland) running but also the Tesio Stakes at Pimlico. So it's going to be 2 races today on ESPN2 at 5:00pm.
I just read this today, I thought some of y'all may be interested to know. Preemptive Strike (one of the Kentucky Derby contenders) is going to run in The Royal Chase, a Steeplechase race at Keeneland race course. If any of you is interested in the article here it is:
Preemptive Strike tops field for Royal Chase for the Sport of Kings

Did anyone see the Florida Derby?? It was great, a really good race. Big Brown won the race by I think it was 3 lengths, and he has a bad hoof problem to the point he had to get special shoes put on. He won the race wire to wire in I think it was 1:40 and change.
As a nine year old boy who loved horses and when I could not be with them physically, then I would be with them spiritually, when I was supposed to be studying chapters in class be it any subject.I would allways be reading a Walter Farley book,(that was the best thing about those text books, they were big,big enough to set the good books inside)The Black Stallion series,Island Stallion,my spirit would fly and then I read Man O War and I soared, not only was this a great horse,he was untouchable this was,The horse of the Gods and he was real.
Many times I dreamed of riding bareback in the wind on that big fire red chestnut.
About a year and a half ago I saw a picture of a mare who just drew me to her(750 miles to her)and when I traced her she went back to him eight times, next week she is going to meet a young fellow who goes to him twenty times,so the foal will go to him twenty eight times.
I hope it is a Fire Red Chestnut Colt, but either way it is a pleasure to know there is a little bit there.
I thought you might like to have a look at an Australian champion racehorse who raced in the late 1980's, his name was Vo Rogue and although not in Man O'Wars class in achievements, he was every bit as exciting as MOW.
He loved to lead and hated to be beaten as is evident in the clip and Australian racegoers adored his never say die attitude.
I wrote an article about horse movies, and mentioned that "Pie," the horse in the 1944 film "National Velvet," was played by a horse named King Charles, who was a grandson of Man o'War. A reader has asked about the bloodlines for King Charles. Would you be able to help? I found two horses named King Charles, one a foal of 1925, another a foal of 1933, who might possibly have been used in the film, but it appears that neither descended from Man o'War. I'd like to answer this reader, if you have any information. Thanks for your help.
Don't know how accurate the info below is, but might help narrow the search.
Am wondering if this horse ever was registered with The Jockey Club as "King Charles." Maybe not. Could've been renamed when put into show horse training. Also, movie trivia sources don't say that he ever raced in real life.
Hope someone can figure this out! :>
From the web:
http://horsefame.tripod.com/1Nvelvet.html
His real name was King Charles a seven year old thoroughbred - a red sorrel with a white stripe on his face and white socks in all for feet. The Rivera Country Club in West Los Angeles, California was where King Charles and Elizabeth first met. This horse was owned by a society woman and trained as a show hunter and jumper. The owner offered King Charles for Elizabeth to ride and she grew fond of the horse and eventually became the equine star of the National Velvet movie.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP)—Winning Colors, the 1988 Kentucky Derby winner who was the last filly to win the race, has died, Gainesway thoroughbred farm said Monday. She was 23.
The roan mare was euthanized Sunday after a bout with colic and buried in Lexington at Greentree Farm, which is now part of Gainesway, Gainesway Vice President Charlie Aker said.
As a 3-year-old, Winning Colors thrilled Derby watchers when she led wire to wire under Gary Stevens, defeating Forty Niner. She also won the Grade I Santa Anita Derby and Santa Anita Oaks that year and finished with eight wins, three seconds and a third. Her earnings totaled $1,526,837, the farm said.
Her win at Santa Anita helped Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas, who bought Winning Colors as a yearling at Keeneland for the late Eugene Klein, decide she could compete with the colts at the Derby.
“She started out dominating competition in her own sex pretty handily, and we then decided that we would step out of the box and try her in the Santa Anita Derby,” he told The Associated Press on Monday night.
“When she won … she was one of the best 3-year-olds in the nation,” he said. “From there, we decided we were going to try it.”
She was the third filly to win the Derby, after Regret in 1915 and Genuine Risk in 1980.
Gainesway purchased her in 1989 for $4 million, one of the farm’s first big broodmare purchases, Aker said.
She left a 2-year-old by Orientate in training and a yearling filly by Mr. Greeley at the farm, Gainesway general manager Neil Howard said.
Her Derby win was “really special” to Lukas. She was the first of four Derby winners for him.
“The Derby winner always captivates the imagination of the race fan,” he said. “But being a filly and beating the colts made it even sweeter.”
One of Winning Colors’ second-place finishes was in the 1988 Breeders’ Cup Distaff, where she led until the end, when Personal Ensign edged ahead to win by inches and retire undefeated in 13 starts.
“If you look back through the history books, (that is) one of the great races of all times,” Lukas said.
Hi everyone,
My name is Melissa and I was 10 years old when I first read Walter Farley's book on Man O'War. It began the love affair with thoroughbred horses and the entire business of racing. A love affair that friends and family couldn't really understand, but one which I pursue today, watching races with my infant son, Noah, whenever there is one on television. I am constantly researching and reading books and articles on the web about all my favs and Man'O War is definitely one of my favs. He was a powerhouse, a true competitor that stood his ground and won his races with the heart and speed that God gave him. What I wouldn't give to have seen him just once in one of his races. I live in Windsor, Ontario Canada. For those who don't know it, it was in this small city, that MAn O' War faced and defeated Sir Barton in the Great Match Race. Kenilworth Park, is no longer a race track. Instead it is a public garden and park, with no mention that a fantastic race between two wonderful horses took place. This is unfortunate. I just wanted to sat thank you to Beth for setting up a great website and for this message board. One more thing before I sign off, I am currently reading a book by Dorothy Ours on Man'o War. A very interesting read. It gives you an inside look at the sport of racing with all its glamor and glitz and its rough spots too. Of course, the best thing about it is Man' O War. Talk to you all soon
My appologies people, the Sunshine Millions Races were yesterday (Sat. Jan. 26) but I didn't find out about it till half the races were run. This is the information that I have right now as to who won what race. Does anyone else have any information as to who won the other races?? Thankyou for any of your help.

I recently purchased a Litho of Man O War signed and dated 1920. The artist is J. Martin. Do you know where I can find more information about the artist or the value of the litho? I paid a $1,000.00 for it. Man O' War was the best!
The trick about this board is, you should be here during horse racing season. You see once horse racing starts, on TV, this board begins to pick up and you see more posts because we talk about the races we saw on TV. I don't know about some of the people on this board but myself, the only way I can watch horse racing is on TV since the closest race track to me is about a 4 hour drive away.
But, both January and February isn't horse racing season. The sport of horse racing, on TV, doesn't really start to pick up till about March (at least this year). So till then, this board will seem to be a bit dead. Then when horse racing starts up on TV, you'll see more posts and "talk" on this board.
Hi everyone. My name is Courtney Rooney. I am 12 years old. I have watched movies that have been made, found out all the imformation I could, and have read several books about Man o War. But yet I am still not satisfied. I love this horse so much. I am truly sorry he never was givin the respect and honorary trust he need and so on, I just wish I could of rode on the back of the great, powerful, stronger then any man horse. Cause I say he was the opening of a gate and on the run to making all the best records and so on with a lot of weight on his back as a young horse. I just hope no one disrespects this horse even though he is dead, just because his records have been beatin by Secretariat, doesn't mean anything. I mean i don't have anyhting against that horse but I mean come on look at the way back when days concidered to Secretariats days. Now that would have been way harder to run on. Well please email me if you are just a big as horse fan of Man O War as I am, I would love to hear and chat with you about any of your storyies just like his. Well I guess I better go. I love him dearly, from what I learned. ~Courtney Kay~
I found out about Man O' War when I was roughly your age. I was addicted to the "The Black Stallion" books by Walter Farley. He wrote a book about Man O' War and I was amazed by him through the story. It wasn't till a few years later that I found out that Man O' War was a real race horse and not a fictional creation from Walter Farley (like The Black was from his book series).
I don'tk now if you follow the sport of Thoroughbred Horse Racing as well but we also talk about the sport on this board as well. I can't speak for everyone else on this board, but where I live I have no one in the nighborhood who knows horseracing to be able to talk about the sport. It's mainly foot ball that rules here.
Where are you from that its all about football, and noone cares about horseracing? I happen to love both sports, but am curious what part of the country you are from. I assume the deep south.
Anyway, happy new year to you!
You could call it the deep south. Where I live I think I'd go into shock if anyone knew that the movie "Seabiscuit" was based off of a REAL race horse that once existed. Much less noticed that it was mentioned in the movie how Seabiscuit and War Admiral were blood related to each other (yes it was mentioned in the movie, in 2 pieces if you understand the breeding terminology).
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everyone! :-) I will be with my family today but I do hope that everyone who comes to this board as a great Holiday season!
On the day Harrding was elected President of the US in 1920 MOW was to have run a race against the clock at Belmont PK. Albiet Belmont PK was closed for the season August Belmont would open it that day to allow MOW a run against the clock. Riddle was offered a purse of $10,000
for this effort in contrast to $500 Roamer got on Aug 21, 1918 for his run on the clock. Bur Riddle never stated openly that MOW was injured in his match race against Sir Barton untill this date in Nov 1920 when he had to refuse the 10k offer because MOW could not stand training any more.
I was reading your web page, I didn't know about the horseshoes and the weight thing. But heres some info that you might not know. Man O' War had and still has the largest stride of any racehorse (29+ ft.)! Man O' War is know buried at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky. He had been staying at the K.H.P after his retirement and one morning they found him .... ya' know. Now no horses are kept in the pasture Man O' War was kept in. He had been buried at his original farm in a pine wood box. After a few years the people from the K.H.P and Man O' Wars owners agreed to move Man O' Wars grave to the K.H.P. Now there is a huge memorial by his pasture there.
I've been to Man o' War's grave. I went see it back in the 1990's at the Kentucky Horse Park, while I was there they also had A.P. Indy there (I think) as well, I got a picture taken with him.
The memorial statue they have of Man O' War is Beautiful, I hope to go back there again one day. I know I always say this to anyone (especially on this board) who has a horse that is descended of Big Red, but I envy you for having a Man O'War horse (a Man O' War descendant), you have a real treasure there. (Anyone who has a Man O' War horse has a treasure, in my opinion)
Hey Beth its me again. When I was telling you about Man O' Wars stride I forgot to tell you that my horse is related to Man O' War. He's her great-great-grand sire or her great-great-great-grandsire or something close. The SAD thing is shes NOT fully thourobred, shes half quater horse but shes still beautifull!
War Pass Juvenile 2yr Champ lineage back to Man O War
by
Hello,
I am very impressed with War Pass' performance in the Champagne at Belmont and the Breeders Cup Juvenile in Monmouth. He totally dominated both races. On the dams side, he can trace his lineage back to War Admiral and Man o War. To early to tell if he is the real thing; however, he is my favorite for next years Triple Crown races. Take, care
i just found out that my horse is a decendant of a decendent of man o war!! im so pumped. my horse's great, great, great grandma is Miss Raffle Deck whos dads family tree decends from man o war. i know its far down but i think its cool!!
November 3, 2007
JAMAICA, New York (Ticker) - Aqueduct Racetrack canceled its horse racing card Saturday afternoon when jockeys refused to ride due to strong winds.
Winds gusts from the remnants of Hurricane Noel were measured up to 30 miles per hour, prompting the decision by jockeys not to ride.
New York Racing Associated management had already shortened the post times between races so the final race would go off at 4:19 p.m. instead of the originally scheduled time of 4:50 p.m.
Saturday's featured race, the 51st running of the $150,000 Long Island Handicap, has been rescheduled for November 11.
For those that don't know it, today is the day Man O' War died, back in 1947. Every year I like to mention this day as a way to remember him, just like I mention his birthday to remember him as well. Everyone I hope you have a good day.
Did anyone see the Breeders' Cup races today (Fri. Oct. 26) F&M Sprint, Juvenile Turf, and the Dirt Mile?? Monmouth Park race track, where the races are being held, was drenched. But even despite that the races were great!
For the F&M Turf Maryfield won even though she seemed to have had experience racing only on a good or fast race track.
For the Juvenile Turf, Nownownow won, he too had no record (according to his past performances I have) on a wet track.
And for the last, the Dirt Mile, it was won by Corinthian, who's racing record was only on fast tracks, yet he torn down the final stretch to win the race (on a sloppy track) and won by (what seemed to be) about 3 lengths or so.
Despite the track, it was great today. I'm anxious to see the rest of the races tomorrow.
We had a GREAT Breeders' Cup this year. For those of you who may have missed the races for whatever reason, the track was still muddy from the rains it was getting.
Race Winner
Juvenile Filies Indian Blessing
Juvenile War Pass
F&M Turf Lahudood
Sprint Midnight Lute
Mile Kip Deville
Distaff (I missed this race, does anyone know who won??)
Turf English Channel
Classic Curlin
The races were great, and the way the track was, it was the X factor that made the races even more interesting since a lot of the horses in the races seemed to have very little or no experience on a sloppy track.
Ginger Punch won the distaff, but I'm sure you know that by now. It was the best race of the day, as she battled down the stretch with Hystericallady, and just held off a hard charging Octave. Check out the replay!
Hey, if anyone here hasn't heard it yet, you should listen to the broadcast of Man o' War's funeral. It can found under media on the claiborne farm website.
Perhaps it's just me, but I remember when there were only 2 Filly and/or Mare races. And the Filly & Mare Turf race is new to me. Perhaps it's just a matter of I'm not use to seeing it and it was here last year. But even though the events are now 2 days long, I'm still getting use to that.
The three new races this year are the Filles and Mare Sprint, the dirt mile and the juvenile turf. You bet i will watch every race! I hope Street Sense pulls through for Nafzger and Curlin has a good effort. I am excited for the turf and juvenile as well :) should be a good year for the BC just as long as it doesnt rain
I had the pleasure of meeting John Henry this year for the first time while in Kentucky for the derby. It was an honor to see the legend in his last moments, and I'm glad I saw him brfore he left us. One of the all time greats.
Cobra venom found in trainer's barn
Substance can be used as painkiller; Biancone under investigation
By Marty McGee
Daily Racing Form

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - One of the materials confiscated by Kentucky Horse Racing Authority investigators during the June 22 search of three Keeneland barns occupied by trainer Patrick Biancone was cobra venom, a substance that can be used as a painkiller, a source close to the investigation confirmed this week.
The cobra venom, which is barred by state regulation from racetrack grounds, was in crystalline form and was found in a refrigerator in one of the tack rooms used for the storage of supplies, said the source, adding the substance was in a small container labeled "Toxin." Snake venom has been known to be injected to deaden or "block" a horse's joint or nerve, and in a case settled last week in Saratoga County, N.Y., two Standardbred horsemen pled guilty of doing just that before a race last October at Saratoga Raceway.
The June 22 search of Biancone's barns was conducted after one of Biancone's horses who raced in Kentucky tested positive for a derivative of caffeine and for a derivative of an inhalant, both of which are banned for raceday use, according to the source. Biancone also has a pending medication case in Southern California. The horse Iron Butterfly, trained at the time by Biancone, tested positive for salmeterol, a bronchodilator, in a January race at Santa Anita.

Did anyone see English Channel in the Vosburgh Stakes?? He won by 2 REALLY TIGHT lengths but it's how he won!!! He was in 3rd narly all the way during the race, running next to the rail the whole time. Then when they made the final turn and the pack was running to the finish line, the horse in front of him was ahead of the pack, and nearly on the rail when English Channel slowly made his way between the rail and the horse in front of him to make it through by barely inches it seemed, and he won!
Today at Belmont Pk the Man O War Stakes is to be run. It is run on grass and MoW never raced on turf! Secretaiat won the MOW in 1973 and set the track record in doing so and Sec beat Tentam an older horse who had a world record on grass.
Only 13,658 showed up at Belmont Park to see Doctor Dino win the MOW Stakes. It was a giveway day at Belmont Park as well with everyone getting a free umbrella with Belmont logo on it. A recent givaway at Saratoga on a Sunday drew 72,000 fans!
Oddly so much porn photos are connected to this site. Same way at DRF site. A shame I think.
Hi everyone, I just saw this article today and thought y'all may be interested in it, especially with the Breeders' Cup races coming in a few months.

Equine Influenza Halts Aussie Racing
Saturday, August 25, 2007
SYDNEY, Australia —
Racetracks across Australia were all but shut down Saturday, the country's richest horse race is in doubt and losses could total more than a billion dollars after an outbreak of equine influenza.
The highly contagious equine virus was discovered in 11 non-racehorses at the Centennial Park complex adjoining Sydney's Royal Randwick racecourse. Five horses at a second Sydney facility also showed symptoms of the disease.
Racing was canceled Saturday across Australia except on the island state of Tasmania and in the Northern Territory as agriculture officials expanded to 6 miles an exclusion zone around the Centennial Park stables and banned all movement of horses within New South Wales state.
New Zealand officials later banned imports of Australian horses, and the Melbourne Cup, traditionally held on the first Tuesday in November, was in danger of being postponed.
In 1986, an equine flu outbreak in South Africa forced that nation's racing industry to close down for five months. Melbourne's leading trainer, David Hayes, said Saturday that the Melbourne Cup may need to postponed by a month.
There were also concerns about security at next week's Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting, which President Bush is scheduled to attend in Sydney. Police horses, stationed at Centennial Park, near the private stables where the 11 cases have been reported, were quarantined Saturday.
The disease is not infectious to humans, but can be carried on clothing worn by veterinary staff or stable workers, raising fears that the disease could spread to other horses beyond Sydney even if horses are quarantined.
Agricultural Minister Peter McGauran said the equine flu outbreak was the biggest risk ever faced by the Australian thoroughbred industry.
"We've never had an introduction of influenza in the equine population of Australia ever before ... If it was to escape beyond the stable of the horses in Centennial Park, it would have a devastating effect on the horse population," McGauran said.
Equine influenza was first detected Thursday at separate facilities in New South Wales and Victoria, where some of the world's most valuable thoroughbred stallions had been imported from Britain for the Australian breeding season.
The imported stallions were to serve some 30,000 mares during the course of the season, and their unavailability _ coupled with the cancellation of race meetings _ was forecast to cost the racing industry billions of dollars.
Most of the impounded horses are thoroughbred stallions with an estimated collective value of more than $400 million.
Among those quarantined were top sires Encosta De Lago, Rock Of Gibraltar, Choisir, Danehill Dancer and Holy Roman Emperor.
Equine influenza is a highly contagious respiratory disease that knocks any horse out of action for two to three weeks with a fever, hacking cough, nasal discharge and tiredness. It can be fatal in foals and virtually all horses exposed to the virus become sickened, making it particularly dangerous _ and costly _ for the racing community.
Last weekend, officials in Japan shut down racing in that nation because of equine flu.

One of Australia's leading racecourses, Royal Randwick in New South Wales has been locked down with 8 horses testing positive to the influenza and the rest of the 700 horses stabled there expected to be infected.
The rich Sydney spring racing carnival has now been abandoned with no race meetings being held across the state for probably 3 months.
Victoria, South Australia and Queensland tracks will start racing this week and hopefully the rich Melbourne spring carnival ( Melbourne Cup ) will still go ahead, providing the equine Flu is contained and does not cross the borders.
This Saturday, Aug. 25 there will be 3 races on ESPN at 4:00PM (EST) for 2 hours. The races are the Travers Stakes, King's Bishop Stakes, and the Bernard Baruch Handicap
Did anyone see the Travers Stakes?? It was GREAT, I was pulling for CP West but when he fell back to 3rd at the final turn I watched Street Sense to see if he had what it took to win and apparently it does. It was a great race :-)
Yes I did. I was routing for Street Sense only because I love the horse and his connections. Street Sense won AWAY from the rail today, (scary thought) This horse had this race in the bag and was just having fun today. Not only did he come home on the wrong lead but when he did change to the right lead he put Grasshopper away at the wire. Street Sense was still accelerating at the wire and it was great to see this colt win.
He just keep's getting more impressive. I love this horse and he has a great heart and seem's to love what he's doing!
I don't care that he just won by a half length, a win is a win, and with the slow pace set up it allowed Grasshopper a better shot, (Grasshopper did get the jump on SS) Any way it was a great race from the top two, and the only other prestigous race Street Sense hasn't won is the Classic, will have to see how he does :)
Until now, I never had a real 'color' view of this horse, but now I can say that a horse I once owned whose papers listed her as his ancestor, had a foal I raised from her birth and had the opportunity to be the first to ride looked exactly like him--legs and all! I still wish I had both horses, but especially the baby! She was so gentle, kind and beautiful. She used to sleep in my lap as a baby, which probably attributed to her extraordinary easy 'breaking'. I heard that she was the only horse of her new 'home' that was allowed to roam in the yard and also the owners found her 'sleeping' between them in the mornings if the left the window open! Love the site! :)
By the way, her name was Star (short for Belle Star).
Hi!
On the Home Page you (Beth) has written that all MOW's records has been beaten. It's worth to mention that all his records was set by him, ONE horse. They were beaten by MANY different horses.
