| Maybe the members of the academy saw through all the special effects and supposedly 'quirky' characters to see that this was just another peice of slick, pseudo profound, feel-good fluff.
Oh no wait, that's the kind of film that usually wins Oscars.
No good explanation, then. The two best foreign films that I saw last year, Wong Kar-Wai's In the Mood For Love and Jacques Rivette's Va Savoir, didn't even get nominated. I haven't seen No Man's Land, but it's human interest angle most likely won it the Oscar. Everybody feels sorry for Bosnians after all, and hates the French.
Anyway, moral of the story. The Oscars are lame: look at the last few years of best picture awards if you don't beleive me. Any award which ends up in the hands of people who could create something as awful as Forrest Gump, Gladiator, or A Beautiful Mind is pretty much worthless.
