You are perfectly right, this film is not supposed to be realistic. It's a dream all along the story. This is why this film is DIFFERENT. Many people like this difference, some don't, I love it. Furthermore, the fact that they don't speak is just an example of something not realistic, there are many more, especially the whole "atmosphere" of the streets of Paris, shown as they have never existed. In Montmartre by end august/beginning september, there should be many tourists everywhere, and the streets are empty...
I am French and interested in how this film is appreciated by you, because it's not often that a french film succeeds in the US. I feared it was "too french" to be well understood, but I realise it's not so difficult, the people I read here have liked the same things as me in the film.
