Heather emailed me this picture on Thursday. The engine should be on the dyno some time later this week. As soon as I get that information I will post it with the rest of the engine build details.

As you can see in the picture, it has iron heads with raised exhaust and a Bud Moore Maxi Box intake sporting a dominator top.

At the beginning of the summer I posted a thread looking for information on this type of combination hoping to get feedback from anyone that had personal experience with a like setup.

Although I am positive that better peak numbers could be achieved with different components, this is going into a 73 Mercury Montego GT that I am building as a period correct Wood Brothers / David Pearson Grand National clone and in this instance I was not willing to sacrifice the authentic look for an extra 50 to 100 HP.

Details to follow.

that's what i'm talkin about

SuperSpeedway! the good ol'days, when gasoline came right out of the pumps!

it looks like it's wearing a top hat. maybe the 50+ extra inches will bring the Bud box into its' own? i wonder if anyone has tried a Bud box on a 408"er yet? your combo might not suffer any HP handicap.

does your 73 Merc GT have the scoops on the hood and the sides? i know a guy that had one, he still goes on to this day about how fast the gas gauge went down. i thought it was a Marauder though, was there an early 70's Marauder?

Ah, memories

That's one unique looking mill, these days. The huge Moore intake and FE lookin' valve covers....suhweeeeet. I too would bet that it won't be sufferin' much loss, what with the extra cubes, I'm guessing a good modern cam profile and whatever other eyes of newts and bat-wings you threw in it. Anxious to learn how well it twists the dyno.

Pictures And Information About The Car

October 22 2006, 6:05 AM

Here are some pictures of the car. It is a work in progress. I have replaced the Magnum 500 wheels that are shown in the picture below with a very cool looking set of 16 X 8 steel wheels that realy look the part. The second picture is a mock up that was taken after the fab work was completed while sinking the bumper. I thought that was going to be an easy weekend project. 47 hours in and still counting. After I finish the work on the nose, I have a complete Hot Rods To Hell truck arm / panhard bar rear suspension kit with jacking bolts and heim joints going in the back of the car. Jacking bolts, tubular uppers, and stock car products front sway bar are in the works to round out the front suspension. As with any project, compromises must be made in an effort to prevent it from being continually in a build state. I also wanted to be able to take advantage of technical advancements where ever possible while maintaining the look of a 1975 stocker using period correct components when possible.

My web site has not been updated in a while so don't ask if the Boss 302 intake or some of the other items listed for sale are still available, but it does have some additional pictures of the car, information on its history, and information about the current engine.

Yes, the valve covers and the port plates were sourced from PME. I just ordered the matching header flanges from them on Thursday.

Head Mods

Sorry, no I do not have any pictures of the heads durring the machining process for the Hi Port plate, the intake stuffers, or of the raised exhaust port face.

It is too bad that I did not take any pictures before it was assembled. It is pretty rare to see a set of Cleveland heads done like this these days.

After going through this once, I would most likely not do it this way a second time.

A set of after market heads these days is way less work, costs less, make more power, and would be way more user friendly.

For instance, the boss where the head is threaded for the power steering pump bolt is now part of the exhaust plate. I need power steering on this car and as a result I will be spending extra time and money to get that one figured out.

Also, plan on building or buying a one off set of custom headers. The flange shape, and height are no longer off the shelf items.

Oh yeah, and I just bought a set of those custom PME exhaust header flanges they make just for their exhaust plate.

The purchase was based on the picture of the product on there website. It was an awesome picture, and it was an exact match for the plate, but what they sent me looks nothing like the picture on the web site. A call back to PME got ma an "Oh, sorry".

I digress...
