BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. (AP) -- The bats found in the attic of an upstate home that was up for sale weren't much of a concern for the couple buying the property.
A few months later, they had a big problem on their hands -- a more than a ton and a half of bat droppings in their attic.
Nick LaBoda and Jenna Caputo say a home inspector informed them there were a few bats in the attic of the house in Saratoga County they were buying. After moving into the home in Ballston Spa last
summer, an exterminator told the couple to wait awhile before having them removed because the baby bats were still too young to fly.
The couple forgot about the bats -- until they smelled a foul odor in January. When they checked the attic, they found dead bats and piles of bat guano.
An exterminator says the hundreds of bats that lived in the attic left behind 3,500 pounds of droppings.
It cost $25,000 to clean up the mess. The couple has taken their insurance company to court after it refused to cover the costs.
