I am a Downers South Alum and I went to see Rice vs Downers South HS at BR. It was a hard played game and a physical one and although Rice won the game, their fans and alumni embarassed the name of the school, Catholic League and all of high school athletics.
You would think they would have learned their lesson when the school was scrutinized when they played Thornton in basketball a few years ago. Their students and parents called a player on Thornton by the discriminating name of "Buckwheat". They did this because his hair was a large afro. "Disgusting" is the word for that and it was highly racist. I can't believe African-Americans would ever choose that school to attend, it is obviously a leader in discrimination and bigotism along with an abuser of alcohol which was shown on the day of the game versus Downers two weeks ago. A majority of their fans were tailgating which is great but there was a overconsumption of alcohol not only witrh adults but also their students. I saw young kids drinking with older men and women and obviously they believe this is a correct way to show school spirit. Well I believe that once again their school has shown it's inability to make boys into adults and in a way their adults have also proven to be children. If you do not believe this story then read the Southtown Economist and ask yourself, "Why is the semifinal game being played at Lockport when it was scheduled to be at Rice?" The answer is that Rice is being penalized by the IHSA and it is being too lenient!!! I believe that since there was student drinking with adults present, the school should be stopped from playing in the playoffs and the season forfeited. Drinking does not belong in high school sports and that school has shown in the past and the present that it has a high alcohol problem with students, parents and faculty. Although this game was moved to Lockport, what is going to stop those morons from drinking again? Nothing is!!
So I implore the IHSA to have representatives at trhe game and in the student sections and taigating parties to watch for alcohol serving. If it is being served the game should be forfeited. Alcohol and smoking are not allowed in any IHSA activity and Br Rice should not be given a pass, period. I also would hope the Lockport police be on hand to pull over fans that have been seen drinking.
I believe in high school athletics and believe in fun but youths and alcohol is like oil and water and taigating is great but alcohol should be nowhere near a campus. So if you want to drink stay away from kids and I hope the IHSA takes care of this problem at Br Rice. It has become an epidemic. The newspapers have written about that schools parents hitting another schools athlete while he was taking a ball out of bounds in basketball, she should have been banned from sports altogether. The fans yelling Buckwheat at a young african american kid, that should have caused a full out school probe and suspensions and now the binge drinking on campus of teenagers, adults and faculty. Tis should be a high price to pay!!!!
By the way "WHERE IS THE FACULTY?" They are suposed to represent the school and show a safe and Christian way to behave a celebrate. That is the biggest disgrace of all of it! The adults even act more like children then the kids do.
When a player scores a touchdown, people implore him to act classy and like he has been there before and now Br Rice has a good football team for once and the fans cannot even behave like adults. So to Br Rice fans act like aults and like you have been there before. There is no room for drugs and alcohol in high school athletics!!
