Excuse me Mustang fan, but teammates of the kid who was being called Buckwheat were the first ones to call him buckwheat. They called him that all season long. When the Brother Rice fans heard the nickname, they called him that too. They were just being idiots, not racists.
I'm not condoning what they did I just don't think some kids at a high school acting like idiots at a game should be labeled racists. Especially when they wer calling the kid a nickname given to him by his own teammates. And by the way, I am a little older than the kids who were at that game and I didn't grow up watching the little rascals and either did those kids (on either team) I doubt the brother rice kids of the opposing team (who came up with the nickname) were fully aware of the racial connotations. |
