I have some questions I need help with. First off, i ordered a pair of 9005 + 9006 krypton 5000k for my 97 camaro as I believed it was a "plug and play" and after reading some of this, im stumped. Do i need anything other than the bulbs? all new housings? new wiring harness? projector? im confused, I mean, will the bulbs just not work in my stock housings? Will they not work because i have no projector? The reason i got them was because my stock lighting SUCKS. THANKS FOR THE HELP, I NEED IT
If the bulb that you have ordered are neither D2R or D2S (actual HID bulbs) then you would have no problem.
Regardless of their name (Krypton or whatever) or claim regular bulbs simply don't produce the same output as HID, and some times even produce worst lighting then standard items as mentioned many times before.
Do as Herman suggests, and go for the Hella 90mm conversion on your Camaro. You will then have lights as good as HIDs (maybe better) at a fraction of the cost. An auxiliary relayed headlight harness is also a good idea, since GM runs their alternators on the high side to overcome the extra resistance inherent in the Delco battery design; nothing wrong with the battery, it's just the way it is. If you go with the harness, you'll have bulbs pumping out better than 2500 lm each, which is a LOT of light. If you're ordering the Hella light setup, get an extra pair of the H9 bulbs, since they're not very common yet, and can be difficult to obtain at an auto parts store.
Ok, i'm thinking that the 93-97 camaros had the SEALED BEAM headlights. I think there were 4 separate housings (2 sealed for lows, and 2 sealed for highs). Now being that they are SEALED, means you can't just replace the bulbs. You need to replace the whole housings, at least my friend had to. I know sylvania may have made a "kit" for you type of car...i could be wrong though.
Brent,
The quad lights on the '97 Camaro aren't sealed beams, in the sense that most people use the term. Rather, they are headlight fixtures, with 9005/9006 bulbs inserted & GLUED to the mounting bases, without a vacuum or exotic gas mix inside the fixtures that surround the bulbs. Some Camaro owners have actually taken burnt-out lights, removed the old bulbs by heating & pulling, and then inserting and gluing new 9005/9006 bulbs in place. Any improvement is/was marginal, since the factory reflectors & lenses aren't very good. What Herman is suggesting is to replace the complete headlight assemblies with the Hella 90mm round lights using H9 bulbs. The light output is phenomenal. I have a 97 Z28 and I bought a 9006 HID retrofit kit from Misterjung. Kit was decent and lighting was a little better. All you gotta do is use a 9006 halogen bulb or HID kit and it will work perfectly. No extra connectors are needed. I sold that kit and just finished doing a Audi A3 HID projector retrofit. Im still waiting on the actual HID kit to get here but the projectors are all installed.
Hope this helps
P.S. a hlogen bulb called "krypton" is just a painted stock bulb giving you LESS light that the regular bulb. Dont waste your money.
"Krypton" (also Superman's home planet) gets kicked around a lot; I have a pair of krypton-labeled 9005 bulbs that I bought a couple of years ago, and they are clear glass, with no trace of blue tint. The bulbs marked "plasma", "superwhite", and a bunch of other meaningless names are almost always blue-tinted, to try to filter out the yellow that is a very large part of the visible light spectrum produced by a burning incandescent (halogen or not) bulb.
