beam cutoff notch question.

Hey guys,

I was thinking of following Milan's HID retro by getting a straight cutoff. I have A6 DOT projectors. My question is: Do I shave the higher part of the cutoff and cut it flush or do I add a piece of metal to the lower part to raise it to the top part? Sorry if it sounds a little confusing. I hope Milan might be able to answer this. TIA!

Regards,
Mike

What the heck is wrong with having the flare if it's even a DOT legal flare?? I think the flare is a very important part of the beam pattern on my A6 DOT projectors. And since the flare is only bright near the center hotspot of the beam, and as you get further off to the side (like in the range where traffic sits to your right at crossroads), then it doesn't bother people there. They only see it as a brief flash when you are about 1/8 mile away, but as you get closer to them, they are too far off to the side of your hotspot and they don't get bothered. That's my experience with that. Maybe Milan felt it was necessary to cut his flare down since retrofitted halogen projectors may have higher intensities off to the sides of the hotspot, but the A6 OEM xenon projector is a DOT legal beam right out of the box. I don't feel that lowering the flare will do anything good for oncoming traffic's sake, and it will only cut your distance vision down drastically to the right and into the ditch or whatever (and that's where the deer like to hang out).

Milan made straight cut-off because he said his car was lowered in the recent forum... so...

Josch,
I agree with your reasoning. Removing the RH flare increases the risk of not being able to see pedestrians along side the road, or trivial things like CURVE MARKERS in time.

Whon't removing the flare allow MORE light to pass through?

I mean... we're talking about shaving down the TOP part of the step to make a straight cutoff, right?

.... as opposed to adding extra metal to bring the bottom part of the step up to the level of the top for a straight cutoff. That would decrease light output.

It's the bottom step that allows the light to shine up & to the right. If you shave the upper step, more light will shine straight ahead, BUT it will also create more light shining to the left, into the eyes of oncoming drivers.

Thanks guys for all your responses. I just gave it a thought since my car is lowered as well. However, based on Josch's reasoning, I'll leave the flare. Thanks again.
