I was just wondering,i ordered a pair of the 90mm projectors and was just wondering how diffrent the beam, wide, shape of light that is projected compared to others like those of BMW, BENZ, and Audi's. I know the depth of the hid bulb will change the optics of the reflected light, can this controle the withed of the beam? Just wondering. Has anyone tried or experimented with this idea before?

You would have to be more specific of model of Audi/BMW and the model of Hella 90mm if you want a specific answer.
Generally, the ECE D2S Hella 90mm projector unit has world class quality and has comparable output levels and beam width to many high end cars equipped with HID. The biggest reason for choosing ECE D2S Hella 90mm for a retrofit is that it comes with weatherproof rear end, which has to be created for all types of OEM HID projector unit. So it mostly winds down to a money/time/material/skill question.

When you say ECE, are these the same as ECE:

No, those are the "DOT-compliant" lights, but the beam pattern's pretty close to the old Cibie Z-beam pattern, which was/is ECE allowed.

The usual; vertical & horizontal. The critical phase (ask Herman) is the initial mounting of the lights so that the cutoffs is/are absolutely parallel to the ground & each other.

Im assuing its the H7 90mm Hella, not the d2s

June 29 2003, 1:40 PM

what is the diffrence beweet the 5 diffrent models of the 90mm projectors. Do they all use the same perabola reflector inside the unit, are the optics the same. Or are the ones with designed for the HID units equiped with with better reflectors....etc. Like I said earlier, you guys seam like you know alot about hids, has anyone tried manipulation the beam by changing the focal point of the light???? just wondering. Thanks for responding by the way guys. I just in the dark about this.

There are slight differences in the reflectors. HID reflectors are designed to light up more to the sides rather than down the road, even though they light up the road ahead just as far as halogen ones. When you talk about "focal length", are you thinking of something like a MagLite (flashlight) where you can twist the end and change the beam pattern? Generally the light source (arc, filament) is placed in the reflector bowl at the point where the MAXIMUM amount of light is captured from the light source and then reflected outward. Think of it as matching a sphere (light source) to a semi-spherical parabola (reflector).

If it is low beams u are looking for, the option 3,4,5 and 6 on http://faq.auto.light.tripod.com/hella-90mm/ is available on the world marked. It also whows where you can buy the differnt units.
This page also have table showing what Hella 90mm unit that will give the best result and for what price, so that anyone can pick and choose depending on need and budget.
There has not been discovered any reason to move bulb out of its original spot without decreasing output, so I am not shure what you had in mind regarding that. There is an exception if you use a differnt bulb, because differnt filaments and HID arcs have different shapes. But result will never be like nite and day differences. It would only be minor optimization results.

I currently am running a 00 civic si with h4, but getting h7 projectors

June 29 2003, 10:10 PM

Im wondering how much modification is required to put my h4 bulbs into the h7 location. Let me know what u guys have in mind. All i have to say is its going to be dremel time. Or whould it be easier just to buy some ds2s into them and modify the houseing for those instead????
