I'd like to improve my lighting on my 03' Excursion, the stock lights leave much to be desired. I have purchased and taken apart. Hella 90mm H1 high and low units, Hella HID Micro DE, and Hella Bi-Xenon module. If anyone wants pics I can get them together and post.
Interesting note is that the mounting plates from the HID micro DE fit the 90mm puuur-fic. Thought of using the Micro De plates to make the conversion to HID for the 90mm H1's. Instead, I mounted the Micro DE high and left and right within the center grill and still need completion of electrics. This is to help with the dark spot on high beams.
Back to my question, I am wondering if anyone has done the modification to the headlight bucket to accept the Bi-Xenon projector unit. I can model the bucket in a high end CAD program and hope to get some insight to any issues found. I guess, I could do a modification to the bucket without fabricating and custom unit if their is a good adaptation.
Any other approaches to improve Excursion lighting? With a 8,000 lb rolling wonder I want to see it before I go over it!
I see the thinking based on heigth of illuminator. Alas, I live in the outer edge of the city and wish to see the deer, skunk, cow before it is too late. I have yet to get into a road rage problem with the stock beams and fogs on, then again they are not the greatest lights. I have looked at the beam patterns and the clip is just like most cars, but as one gets closer to the truck 3 feet does come into play. Considering that I cast the light over the roof of some cars it might be better to switch to high beams. I have considered making a double Z beam plate to provide clipping on the driver side.
It appears to me that the sharp clipping action of the Hella Bi-Xenon would avoid the road rage issue and modifing the plate to a double z beam would help.
I use the HID Micro-DE on the high circuit so that is no issue with traffic.
I considered using the Hella 4000 but two eight inch HID reflectors would bring to much attention to the truck. It was a tough decision!
That would be nice, if we could all go back to the earlier glass & metal headlights, ditching all the plastic crap that vehicle makers insist on producing. BTW, I have a set of the above on my '90 Toyota pickup, a BIG improvement over the factory-furnished lights.
Nice thought! I will look for the bucket to see how it can be adapted. Hummm ... now adapt HID in H4 glass.
The glass light adaptor may be difficult because the light is centered and in the new style an offset exists to the outboard side of the light. Good idea anyway! Maybe I will model a version this way just for kicks.
I got some photos of the HID water resistant unit from Hella and the Micro De mounting. But I cannot find the insert object button.
I see some F250/F350s on the road that already have H6054 bulbs installed in lieu of the aerostyle capsules. What I had in mind was to swap in the appropriate Ford parts and use one of the readily available H6054 substitute capsules to modify.
