D2R has masked areas on the capsule glass, and the D2S glass is clear. The mounting keys on the bases are 180º "out" from each other.

DO YOU THINK IT WOULD BE A PROBLEM REPLACING THE D2R WITH THE D2S,OR WOULD YOU.THE REASON I'M ASKING IS THAT I NEED SOME NEW BULBS ,MINE GOT BROKEN IN AN ACCIDENT.THE ORIGINAL BULBS WERE THE D2R,BUT I FOUND A VERY GOOD PRICE ON SOME D2S,AND WAS WONDERING IF IT WOULD MAKE THAT MUCH OF A DIFFERENCE.THANKS FOR YOUR HELP.

You would expect to...

you would expect to have a slight increase in glare as the reflector housing was designed to utilize the painted strip of the D2R to help define the beam pattern.

for the most part, the beam pattern would be the same with the exception at the cut-off. it wouldn't be as clear and defined. now how significant a change will naturally vary between different headlamps.

See here:

If you have OEM HID with D2R capsules in there, D2S capsules won't fit, unless you Dremel new notches in the D2S capsule bases.
