HI guys,
I know this has nothign to do with lighting, but it does for some electrical parts. So here goes.
I have installed some heat seaters into my car, 96 avalon, and wired the + straight to the battery. Of course, I forgot to turn it off the second night and the battery was dead. So my friend told me to find a place int eh fuse box and only supply power when the hot key is turned.
In my avalon, there is a fuse already in the box that has "seat hrt", if I wire the +s from the heat seats to that fuse insert, would that then end my battery crisis. Therefore, only turn on when the key is turned.
Also if this was the course of action, how would I wire the + to them? The positive wires already has a built in 10a fuse. Should I just 'plug the positive' into the fuse box? Any help would be appreciated.
Yes, wiring the seat heater to any circuit that only has power when the car is on (ACC mode) will solve your problem. Just make sure your not straining the circuit. You may need to run a relay. I'm not sure how many amps a typcial seat heater draws.
So if I wire the positives to the 'seat heat' fuse panel, it should solve my problem right? I also have a 12v tester pen/screwdriver. How do I use it to check the fuse? It has a wire attached to it, with the end having clip.
Heating resistances consume a lot of power (watts) and draw high amperage. make sure what the load is, and hook it up to a corresponding amps fuse. Don't alter the fuse in the slot, as you may fry the corresponding wiring.
One end of the tester shold have an aligator clip. Clip this end to a BOLT, or a KNOWN GROUND. Then pull the fuse on the circuit you are planning on using. Stick the tester in the circuit where the fuse was (try both, there will be 2, and one will always be dead without the fuse in).. now turn the key to the on position while leaving the tester in. The light should come ON inside the tester when you turn the car too ACC(on) position and go off when you turn the key/car off.

I wanna try that today and hopfully it will work. There is a storm hitting Massachusetts again Sunday night, and I would like to be able to use the seat heat without worry of forgetting to turn it off! Thanks so much!
