Using Hella Audi A3 twin headlamp kit to make my own custom kit

Hi

I'm building another Beetle, a 73 model this time. This is my old car, which I’ve sold. http://www.clubvw.org.au/steve.htm I'm in Australia so I need RHD lights. I have the chance to purchase a Hella Audi A3 S3 quad headlamp Xenon kit to suit Audi A3 S3 09/ 96 to 08/ 00 from the UK, I would pull the kit apart and fit it into some Beetle headlight housings with clear lenses.

Does anyone see any problems with doing this?

Locally I have priced 90mm Hella lamps, in Halogen, it would cost me 701.100 EUR or 462.849 GBP for 2 low beams and 2 high beams. A Xenon conversion kit for these would cost another 876.609 EUR or 579.169 GBP

A set of 2nd hand e46 units cost 935.091 EUR or 617.155 GBP down here.

Cool... A bug with HID!

The pre 2003 A3 headlamp looks like this:

It does contain turn lights as well, which u will not need... Would u even have space for them? That's a cosmetic design question you can find out. I'd use a graphical program like Paint Shop Pro to find a decent disign.

Electrically, there should not be any problems wiring it up. As far as I can remember back from my high school days, the bug uses H4 style bulb (at least in Norway), so just crunching a bulb and making a harness as described on faw is not a biggy, but it will take some time.

You refer to "kit" in your posting.... I'd suggest to stay away from buying a halogen headlight and then upgrading it with Xenon afterwords. You are starting from nothing, so using a OEM HID headlight will give better beam, better mechanics stability, less prone for water intrusion etc.

The prices on the H7 Hella 90mm is 40-50 Euros in Germany. They are turnable for right and left hand driving. I have them myself, and they are great, but I would not advise to upgrade them to Xenon. Osram has 65Watts "+80" bulbs that would be the brightest you can go in H7 Hella 90mm. The other prices you mention sounds horrific, compared to evrywhere else, but I have heard that from other builders in Austrailia/New Zealand as well before.

hope this helps

Hi Herman

Thanks for your response. The headlights I will be using are the 6-volt style. I will stack the light units, the xenon on top with the high beam below, and then make a polished stainless or carbon fibre cover to hide all the adjusting screws.

I wont be the 1st to put HIDs in a bug, have a look at this thread. http://www.volkszone.com/VZi/showthread.php?s=&threadid=69126
