H4 Harness Help

Hey guys!!

I've spent sometime getting the needed supplies from Radio Shack and I've also purchased S2000 Projectors, S2000 Ballasts and OEM S2000 Bulbs. I'm all set for the retro fit, but right now I have some questions about H4 wiring.

I purchased 2 Male H4 connectors that plug directly into my factory harness (2000 Civic Si (USA)). I went this way, so If I ever had to change back to OEM there would be any cutting or splicing back.

This is only going to be a low beam setup, meaning I know that I won't have any high beams after the retrofit.

Here is a pic of the H4 male connectors - just for reference.

The Question(s):
-------------------
1. Where Exactly does the diode go? If possible could you save the image to your local computer and open it up in PAINT and just draw on exactly where - I think that's the easiest way.

2. What goes into #85 on the relay? I'm guessing the Low beam wires terminated by a female quick disconnect (0.250")

3. Whats goes into #86 on the relay? I'm guessing the ground wires terminated by a female quick disconnect (0.250")

4. Since I'm not going to be using my high-beams, should I leave the wires closed off with a wire nut OR does that get soldered/wired into the low beam wiring too (i.e. so that when the high beams are clicked on, I won't shut off the HID's?)

5. I purchased a relay from Radio Shack, its an Automotive Relay, 12V (coil voltage) and is 30AMP - is this okay for my application?

Here's a sad picture of what I was asking above, incase it was hard to follow.

Thanks in Advance
Fred

1. The right way to wire up an a car with H4 is reading "How do I make my own low beam HID harness in a car with dual headlights?" on http://faq.auto.light.tripod.com/headlamp-harness.html
You will be tapping signal from hewadlight switch which is hidden so that you can hide however you want to connect there.

2&3. Trigger pins (85 & 86) on automotive relays do not have any polarity.

4. Another reason for doing what I explained in (1).

5. A radio Shack relay will work fine for a up to 3 years. They are not as high quality as OEM relays, whcih typically use brand name Bosch, Hella, Siemens, Omron or Tyco. See "What do I need to build my own harness?" on http://faq.auto.light.tripod.com/headlamp-harness.html for more info.

hope this helps

Herman,

I've read that webpage (many times), but for someone who isn't a master, its difficult. "Tap in point" means nothing to me. To me its not about loction of the diode. I'm more concerned with its functionality.

Now as I look on that page (where you linked me), I see another diagram where the 85 and 86 of the relay are different. 85 is grounded and 86 is taking the diode but where does the wiring go for the low beam? Shouldn't it go to the relay, so once the headlight is triggered it will fire the relay??

Now I'm totally confused.

On a 4-prong automotive relay, you have numbered prongs, where:
85 = relay ground
86 = trigger current (from light switch)
30 = power in from B+
87 = power out to device being powered (headlight)

Note: 85 & 86 may be reverse-wired, but it's considered "unconventional".

The blocking diode is to prevent reverse cascade current damage to the switch powering the trigger current when its (the relay) field collapses. This means that the diode should allow the trigger current to go into the relay, but prevent the cascade current from going back to the switch when the trigger current is removed. In other words, a diode is a type of check valve that only allows current flow one-way. So, with conventional wiring, you'd put the diode at 86, pointing it so the current only flows FROM the switch TO the relay (86).

Thanks for the reply.

I just took a photo of the back of the relay and I'm wondering if they made a mistake on the packaging

If ground is 85, I'm wonder why it says "86-Ground"

Also 30 should be 12V in (from the battery) Im wonderng why this relay has 30 as 12V out. It also has 87 as 12V in .. hmmmm

Here's the picture

Thanks Once again!

Look again; it's showing prong 85 as ground, but the arrow is labeled, 86-ground. They also have the power input/output reversed from the conventional method. Look on the package or the relay itself and you'll see "Made in Taiwan", or "Made in China". 'Nuff said! Study this:http://www.danielsternlighting.com/tech/relays/relays.html

I`m tryin to do the same h4 harness, but much more confused:

from the separetly mounted halogen hi beams go out 2 wires that are connected into h4 socket.From the old halogen projectors go out also 2 wires that are supposed to be connected somehow to the ballast, right?

Ground from the halogen projector goes where?
Bulb wire from the halogen projectors goes where?

Please rephrase the question(s); I don't understand what you're asking. If English isn't your native language (to some on this board, it is not), have someone help you with the wording of your problem.

THANKS guys, I already done with h4 harness, it took almost for 2 days to get in to diagrams and figure out how to connect everything.Now I`m done with my first RETRO: 01-03 TYC projectors retrofitted with Valeo single d2s! Now I have to aim them.

Sorry Doh-Doh, plz. disregard my email to you.
