I opened my eyes everything was blurry and twisted and mixed together, my mouth was dry, i tried to call out for someone but it required energy something i didn't have. My legs hurt, especially my back right one, and my head ached. i tried to lift myself up, but i was tied to something and couldn't lift myself. "There, There little one" A womans soft, soothing voice murmered. The voice was eerily comforting, in a motherly way. I looked at the figure. "MOTHER" I managed a small croak. "shh" She soothed. "You have got to pull through this my darling" She whispered. I blinked up at her begging to just be allowed to die. "Noel, Jason needs you, you will need him sooner than you think, you aren't meant to be withouth him" Mother gently touched my nose and then was gone. I felt my limps sink into the earth. The smell of cedar filled my nostrils and was soothing.
"Well goodmorning sunshine" A friendly, soft and nurturing voice asked me kindly. "We've been worried about you lovey" She smiled. I knew this woman, i wasn't quite sure but my body told me to trust her with my life...literally. "hold still" she took out a long plastic tube and took my lip with her hand and twisted it. I didn't fight back because i was too weak. Slowly the plastic tube was slid into my mouth and warm bran mash was fed to me. It was warm and soothing and relaxing. "Good girl, you know you've got a broken leg, and your skull is fractured. "Well we're fixing you up for free, considering you're my sons horse" She talked to me freely as the food was pumped. It tasted delicious and I enjoyed listening to her talk. "You're a good girl aren't ye?" she patted my neck. I flicked my tail in appreciation sudden joy momentarily filled my body.
Around dinner time, was when i woke up, i had needles all over me, i was very tired and was restrained. Jason i smelled him, he was near by. I managed a tiny whinny. "shh" he soothed. "Look at you" He smiled. I stared at him, his eyes were smiling at me, and my heart was overcome with nothing but love for him. He looked at me like no other human ever had, he read into me, like no other human, not even Mindy, and she could talk to horses. It was like Jason and i had a certain language of our own and he could read into my personality. "You're so beautiful" he murmered. I croaked a small nicker. "And i'm going to help you recover, and you're going to help me recover and we're going to be crippled together" He began to cry. I flicked my tail "feel better, don't cry!" I squealed. "Save your strength" He lowered his body and took himself out of his wheelchair and sat beside me in the straw. "I wanted to tell you what we had to do to help you recover." He said. I flicked my ears and twitched my nose letting him know that i was hanging onto every word. "Well, the truck, it--it ran into your head first, we're so surprised you didn't die from you head being smashed, but Mom...she put a metal plate in there. She told me that it's important that you aren't left outside in stormy weather, she said you shouldn't even be in a stall where there is metal..lots of rubber mats." He paused. I let it sink in not really understanding but somehow i did. "And," he went on, " and you're back right leg was shattered completely...Noel, you're a three legged horse." I found my energy enough to lift my head. I knew what he was talking about this time. I whinnied in total bewilderment. "Noel, shhhh" he ran his hands over my quivering body. "Noel, settle down or they'll make me leave" i watched him, his eyes brimmed with tears. "YOu're very sick right now Noel, even with all these surgeries....you-y-you could still die" he broke down and fell into tears. I didn't know what to do, my body was possesed with a huge wave of exhaustion and weakness and my head hurt my eyes ached. "Noel you're going blind in you beautiful blue eye" He added laying his head on my neck. I felt dizzy and was grateful for the fact that i was laying down. I listened to Jason sob, he let everything out, he talked about his sister, his family, how scared he was that he might lose ashley between all of this hell, i listened until my body was a puddle of exhaustion which is when his mother came to tell him that visiting hours were over. |
