How was everyone's Christmas? Hopefully great. Mine was very relaxing. I have thankfully finished all of my exams for this semester. In grade 12 they come in two parts and are worth half my mark, so I have been stressed as of late. Anyways, enough of that.
It had been a quiet, rather morose Christmas. Jakob and I stayed at Fionn's house for the majority of the past few weeks helping her out and taking care of Damhnatt. The funeral for Jakob's father had been two weeks previous and was perhaps one of the most lovely funerals I had ever attended. Everyone shared their memories and Jakob's twin sister sang a beautiful Gaelic piece which her father had loved (she really has a stunning voice). I felt bad leaving Toby in charge and it was definitely time to be moving back to Evergreen.
Upon reading the will shortly after his father's death, Jakob and I learned that we were to be Damhnatt's legal guardian. Apart from the fact that our apartment was not big enough for two adults, a young energetic girl, and a baby, I saw nothing wrong with that. I knew Damhnatt adored her brother, and as Fionn admitted, she quite liked me too.
So we all loaded into the truck and drove back to Evergreen one warm January afternoon. Damhnatt played with Kyle in the back seat, keeping him occupied and I was thankful.
We reached Evergreen an hour later and Toby was there to help us unload. I hugged him and thanked him for looking after everything while we were gone. He promised me it was no trouble and helped us to our apartment. God, it was small. I put Kyle in his crib for a nap and set up a cot for Damhnatt in the living room. Hopefully it would be temporary. Toby chuckled.
"I fear my family takes up too much room, but now you're already there!"
"This won't do for much longer, will it?" I said.
Jakob nodded.
"Jakob, can we go see your new horse?" Damhnatt asked.
"Sure we can, love," he replied and gave me a quick look.
I offered Toby a seat and a cup of tea. Shortly after they left the phone rang.
"Hello?"
"Hey Scarley, it's Fionn, is Jakob there?"
"Ah, he just left with Damhnatt to go see his horse. Can I do anything for you?"
"Well, we actually discovered something else for Jakob in the will..." she said.
"Oh."
"It's a house. He needs to come claim it within a few days here, if you can tell him that?"
"Sure. Thanks."
"Bye, Scarlet."
"Bye."
"What was that?" Toby inquired.
"Jakob's been left a house," I told him, rather surprised. "His father had another house, I suppose..."
"Well, then, you won't be too cramped for much longer..."
